Valve Index Headset - Ultra Near-Field Off-Ear Headphones or Ear-Speakers

An interesting research was unveiled last week by Valve, an entertainment software and gaming technology company founded in 1996 and based in Bellevue, WA. In 2016, Valve launched SteamVR, a platform for distribution of virtual reality (VR) products, which lead the company to develop its own VR headset - the Valve Index. In the development process leading to the company's new VR headset, Valve has made significant progress not only in the display, lens, and field of view aspect of VR goggles, but also on the aural side. Emily Ridgway, audio researcher at Valve Software, describes the company's take on what they call "off-ear headphones" or "ear-speakers."

Biamp Systems Accelerates Expansion with Acquisition of Community Loudspeakers and Apart Audio

Biamp Systems, a manufacturer of video and audio networked solutions for commercial audio applications based in Beaverton, Oregon, announced the acquisition of Audioprof Group International, parent company of Community Loudspeakers based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Apart Audio based in Antwerp, Belgium from 3d Investors of Gent, Belgium. The strategic acquisition follows the expansion strategy defined by Rashid Skaf, Biamp's President and CEO, appointed by Highlander Partners, a private investment firm which acquired Biamp in November 2017.

Waves Audio Uses Nx Technology to Recreate Abbey Road Studio 3 Room Emulation

Waves Audio introduced the Abbey Road Studio 3 plugin, created in collaboration with Abbey Road Studios. Using its Waves Nx 3D audio binaural encoding technology to emulate the acoustics of a space, the new plug-in allows anyone to work with headphones, as if it was inside the Abbey Road Studio 3 Control Room. For music producers, this means the ability to hear the music in the renowned studio, with an emulation of the studio's nearfield stereo monitors, 5.1 or 7.1 setups.

Certainly one of the most interesting displays at InfoComm 2019 was the Studio Six Digital side of the AudioControl booth, now that the companies are effectively united, following the acquisition in 2018 of part of the capital of the company founded by Andrew Smith. It was great to see important updates on the Studio Six audio test and measurement systems for the iOS platform, but also an exciting new product, the dBPod Smart Sound Monitor.

A small team of designers from Bucharest, Romania, have been working for the past couple of years on a new brand called Oupio. Currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, their first product combines a portable speaker with LED lighting and its called Oupio M. The design and concept looks great, and the team carefully researched the best possible options, including choice of materials and speaker design, opting for a combination of Balance Mode Radiator drivers from Tectonic Audio Labs.
