In environments where sound must be captured through solid barriers like walls, windows, or sealed enclosures, conventional microphones simply fail. Microphones rely on airborne sound, rendering them ineffective when the source is physically separated by materials that block or distort acoustic transmission. This article describes an approach based on structure-borne sound acquisition, combining surface-attached vibration sensors with advanced digital signal processing.

Immediately following the intense schedule of the High End show in Munich, Germany, audioXpress attended the 2025 Audio Engineering Society European Convention (May 22-24) in Warsaw, Poland. An exciting event where most deeper technical sessions focused on spatial and immersive audio. But what does Immersive even mean? What Is the Future of Spatial Audio for Consumers? Those were questions asked and debated at this AES convention, where leading audio engineers and researchers focused on the latest advancements in those audio applications.

High End Audio Meets the Future. From May 15-18, audioXpress attended the 42nd edition of the High End show. The 2025 edition of High End was vibrant, exciting and full of new interesting things to discover. And it was also the last one in Munich. This article details our impressions of a show that will be remembered very fondly by all participants and attendees, with every corner of the MOC Event Center Messe München sold out. Next year, the High End show is moving from Germany to Austria.

Hope is on the way for High-Quality Wireless Audio. The Bluetooth SIG is accelerating its technology updates and anticipating an ambitious roadmap of technology updates. With more than 50 active enhancement projects in process for upcoming specifications, including High Data Throughput, Bluetooth will evolve to support lossless codecs, high-resolution audio, and even multichannel formats. Every two years the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) holds a noise and vibration conference in Grand Rapids, MI, that is of great interest for anyone working with automotive audio. This year’s SAE Noise & Vibration Conference and Exhibition, May 12-15, proved to be equally appealing. A great content program, great discussions with the experts and valuable perspectives from noise and vibration experts.

In both enterprise and consumer audio, a profound transformation is underway. Devices that once passively transmitted sound are now becoming intelligent, adaptive, and context-aware. Apple’s latest AirPods 4, with their AI-enhanced features, have elevated mainstream awareness of what premium audio can feel like — personalized, immersive, and effortless.

The 2025 NAB Show took place from April 5-9 (exhibits opened April 6) in Las Vegas, NV. The traditional gathering of content, media, and broadcast production hosted annually by the National Association of Broadcasters was once again a reenergizing showcase for all the professionals working on these always-evolving industries that traditionally have helped uphold the highest standards in quality of audio and image. But NAB 2025 was not business as usual.

Over a period of 10 days, at the end of March 2025, I have visited the vibrant Shanghai region of China following an invitation by the China Audio Industry Association (CAIA) to attend the organization's Global Audio Summit 2025. I have often participated in events promoted by national and international audio industry associations, mostly oriented by scientific, academic, engineering, or trading charters. But this one was one of the most vibrant product development conferences I have ever attended. Here is my report.
