Audinate Launches Versatile Dante Pro S1 System-on-a-Chip

Audinate, the developer of Dante professional audio networking technology, announced Dante Pro S1, a compact and cost-effective system-on-a-chip (SoC) for professional equipment manufacturers. The compact and power-efficient SoC solution was designed to integrate Dante audio in low channel count devices such as microphones, conferencing systems, powered speakers, or AV plates, with scalability for future feature enhancements.
 

According to Audinate, this new Dante Pro S1 chip represents the latest generation of Dante devices for OEMs and is designed to meet the evolving security requirements for enterprise Internet-of-Things (IoT), Unified Communications (UC) and advanced audio system implementations.

The chip solution will be a focus of Audinate’s new innovations and provides a platform for new features such as media encryption. Dante Pro S1 offers an alternative to the Ultimo chip for OEMs building low channel count devices. New designs are encouraged to use Dante Pro S1 as it will provide future features and capabilities that may not be supported by Ultimo-based products.

The Dante Pro S1 SoC is designed for compact and power-efficient audio equipment solutions requiring Dante network interoperability. The chip is a versatile TFBGA100 package (8mm x 8mm) and requires minimal external components to complete system integration. The underlying microcontroller is more power efficient than previous Dante solutions, resulting in low heat dissipation for space-constrained equipment designs.

The device is offered in multiple package configurations to meet the exacting requirements of OEMs. The configurations announced today support up to 24-bit 2x2 channels at 96kHz or up to 4x4 channels at 48kHz audio encoding (Dante supports 16, 24 or 32-bit audio resolution).

System designs can easily integrate Dante Pro S1 through a 100Mbps RMII network interface, I2S and SAI audio pins, and control over UART and SPI. These industry standard interfaces simplify the design process and reduce development costs and time to market.

An evaluation kit is available for equipment manufacturers to prototype system designs using Dante Pro S1. The kit is based on the Dante Pro S1 reference design and includes XLR connectors for analog I/O and swappable network interface modules for a range of PHY and switch ICs. A full suite of technical documentation is also available.

Audinate has achieved the extremely difficult task of creating the audio-over-IP technology that is effectively the market standard in professional audio applications. Not resting on leading the audio industry even though Dante still needs to expand into broadcast applications and other market segments that remain fragmented due to legacy and networked technologies that dispute the same applications, Audinate initiated a transition to evolve its solutions to combine multichannel audio with single-channel video for "AV type" applications. Audinate now calls its technology "Dante AV over IP" even though most of the manufacturers mainly recognized Dante as the "de facto" standard in audio networking.
