Ubilite Introduces Wi-Fi SoC With Less-Than-Bluetooth Power Consumption

Ubilite, a San-Diego, CA-based semiconductor company founded in 2014, announced the immediate availability of its UBI206 platform and SoC, targeted specifically for ultra-low power wireless applications. The UBI206 is a highly integrated single device that enables a vast number of connected products with a minimal number of external components. Although originally designed targeting industrial IoT applications, the chip enables truly ultra-low power Wi-Fi audio streaming solutions with a 10-fold improvement in power consumption. 
 

The Ubilite UBI206  solution includes a switchless 802.11b/g/n radio, baseband processor, medium access controller (MAC), power management unit (PMU), memories, and a network application processor that runs the Wi-Fi link-layer protocols, TCP/IP stack, and IoT applications. A key point is the ability of the platform to support high data rate, Wi-Fi rich applications, using 802.11n with up to 72MBps. According to the company, the excellent sensitivity of the test platform enables designers to achieve long range in downlink and uplink modes.

Ubilite highlights the fact that its solution is the first in the market to bring Wi-Fi applications within the reach of low power applications, with 10x less power consumption than comparable solutions. This paves the way for Wi-Fi-based high-resolution personal audio devices, such as portable digital players wireless, headphones and even earbuds, as the wireless connection takes >90% of the total power budget.

The company says that it is ready to support companies wishing to explore developments in audio, wearables, and smart home applications. Ubilite says its SoC will enable the flexibility required for designers working on solutions that require high data rates and longer range while running on small capacity batteries and that until now where restricted to using Bluetooth. On wearable devices, this could pave the way for products that have none of the audio bandwidth compromises of Bluetooth and still be able to offer extended battery life. 

In home audio applications the Ubilite SoC offers a fully-untethered audio experience in every room while being connected, for example, to a smart speaker. Unlike Bluetooth, the solution would support always-on, cloud-connected services and applications for music, smart home control, and communication. Apart from smart speakers, other possible applications in Smart Home designs include wireless security cameras, lighting control, doorbells, and door locks.

The UBI206 was designed from the ground up at system level to optimize for lowest operating power and is the result of many years of development," says Ismail Lakkis, CEO and founder of Ubilite. “Our solution offers a Wi-Fi experience with power consumption matching Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), thereby unleashing the full power of the IoT and enabling applications never before possible."

The UBI206 platform is optimized for several ultra-low power application markets that can benefit from a IEEE 802.11/b/g/n connection with data rates up to 72.2 Mbps. The Ubilite reference specifications detail an active power consumption of 17mW for reception (-97dBm sensitivity) and 25mW for transmission (+6dBm power), with 85uA DTIM10 power consumption.

The UBI206 SoC is available in a 5x5mm QFN48 package and Ubilite provides a full Wi-Fi stack with full support for IPv4 and IPv6.
