Microchip Introduces New Bluetooth 5.0-Qualified, Dual-Mode Audio IC and Certified Module with LDAC Codec Support

October 8 2019, 10:35
Microchip introduced the new BM83 SoC, a Bluetooth 5.0 certified dual-mode audio module that contains an on-board Bluetooth stack and audio profiles and supports 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio formats to enable high-fidelity wireless audio, including support for Sony’s high fidelity LDAC codec. The combined solution is intended for both new speaker and headphone designs, offering differentiated features.

The corresponding IS2083 dual-mode audio IC features an integrated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that decodes AAC and SBC codecs and executes advanced audio and voice processing such as Wide-Band (WB) speech, Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) and Noise Reduction (NR). The new Microchip platform provides flexibility in customizing peripheral settings and DSP functionality with the use of a Windows operating system-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) configuration tool.

Both the IS2083BM IC and BM83 module enable users to reduce Bill of Materials (BOM) in Bluetooth 5.0 wireless audio designs, helping Bluetooth speaker and headphone manufacturers to maintain product differentiation in a competitive wireless audio market. New designs benefit from Microchip's pre-programmed firmware and can be quickly expanded with new features deployed via USB, UART and Over-the-Air (OTA) firmware upgrades.

Microchip's proprietary Wireless Concert Technology (WCT) streams audio to multiple devices from the same audio source. With its tight speaker synchronization, WCT delivers uninterrupted music to a network of speakers for party streaming. An integrated power amplifier helps achieve longer range, and the embedded mode functionality enables system control without a host MCU.

Measuring just 5.5 x 5.5 mm, the low-power IS2083BM IC is ideal for small form factor designs and gives developers more space to use larger batteries in end products. Both the IS2083BM IC and BM83 module offer highly integrated features, including and embedded mode that eliminates the need for an external host MCU to support application functionality, and an integrated power amplifier that includes up to +9.5 dBm output power, removing the need for an external power amplifier.

The combined solution offers an integrated 2 Mbyte Flash memory, providing the ability to store updated files during over-the-air (OTA) updates and software settings without external storage. With support for Sony’s LDAC audio codec technology, designers can extend high-resolution audio support and reach mass market with differentiated, high-quality Bluetooth wireless designs.

The IS2083BM IC and BM83 module also integrate Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Data Length Extension (DLE) and LE Secure Connection (LE SC) that enables approximately 2.5 times higher data throughput and improved security when transmitting data such as during firmware updates. A suite of development tools, Microchip’s mobile application and example codes for rapid development are supplied to developers.

The BM83 module is available in a 32 x 15 x 2.5 mm package, while the IS2083 IC comes in a 5.5 mm2 BGA package. Both units are RoHS-compliant and operate over a temperature range of -40C to +85C.
