Asahi Kasei Microdevices Develops New Automotive Audio DSPs Supported by Audio Weaver

December 22 2023, 02:35
Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) has unveiled the new AK7018 and AK7017, pin-compatible audio DSPs featuring dual and single HiFi 4 CPUs, respectively. The two new products in the company's automotive audio DSP line are both compatible with DSP Concepts' Audio Weaver, joining the existing AKM AK7709VQ Multi Core DSP with SRC. AKM will present these new products at CES 2024 where it plans to showcase its latest advancements in mobility solutions, including a demo car with an immersive audio experience.
Expected to start sampling in the first quarter of 2024, the two additions to the AKM AK701x series of automotive audio DSPs were designed to boost the development possibilities for in-car audio and voice experience applications.

To bring support for the Audio Weaver platform to the AK701x family, AKM has partnered with DSP Concepts, leveraging its leading expertise in the field of embedded audio software. This integration has resulted in a flexible and scalable audio and voice application development environment, opening access to the rich ecosystem of 3rd party audio algorithms providers that are already on Audio Weaver. These include audio IP from Fraunhofer, DTS, BACCH, Sensory, Mimi and more, while development based on Audio Weaver can also be supplemented with engineering services provided by DSP Concepts.

The AK7018/AK7017 devices are advanced digital signal processors featuring dual (AK7018) or single (AK7017) HiFi 4 DSP cores, as well as eight stereo and four mono asynchronous sample rate converters (ASRC), supporting sampling frequencies up to 192kHz. These devices also include integrated DIR and DIT peripherals. Both allow for efficient simultaneous processing of multiple data streams at different synchronous sample rates. With eight independent clock zones, combined with 20 total channels of ASRC, they allow for a large variety of clocking configurations. Additionally, the HiFi 4 DSP cores (single core on AK7017) run at up to 491.52MHz , enabling high-speed and flexible audio data processing.

The AKM AK701x devices allow for great flexibility in the creation of advanced automotive infotainment systems by adding the Tensilica HiFi 4 DSP cores with 32-bit fixed and floating-point performance. The AK7018’s dual HiFi 4 DSP configuration allows for simultaneous high-resolution audio processing on one core and voice processing, in addition to other features, on the other.

Since the HiFi 4 is a C-programmable DSP, users may elect to use both cores with Audio Weaver, or mix and match, using the second core (or both cores) to run other custom audio algorithms. The AK701x family's flexible clocking options and rich I/O support are suited for even the most complex audio systems, and the single-core AK7017 provides a scalable, pin-compatible solution for more straight-forward system variants.

These new devices join the existing AKM AK7709VQ Multi Core DSP with SRC, which is also supported by the Audio Weaver platform. The AK7709VQ features 2 HiFi4 cores (MCLK 492MHz) and 4 AK (AKM original) DSP cores (MCLK 492MHz), allowing for Audio and Voice processing with multiple - synchronized -  sampling rates. The AK7709VQ is a highly integrated digital signal processor, including 8 stereo and 4 monaural sampling rate converters supporting sampling frequency up to 192kHz, a DIR and a DIT. The DSP1 and DSP2 support 491.52MHz operation clock and are optimized for C-language support. AKDSP1, AKDSP2, AKDSP3 and AKDSP4 have 10240 step/fs (when fs=48kHz) processing power.

AKM at CES 2024
Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) will return to Las Vegas for CES 2024 with a focus on sensing and mixed-signal solutions for Automotive Mobility and HealthTech. In this last field, AKM will demonstrate an interesting application of energy harvesting with its step-up DC/DC converters, allowing power generation from body heat, as well as a millimeter-wave Radar transceiver IC in a contactless stethoscope application. In the Automotive Mobility Solutions area, AKM will showcase its Acoustic Design Solution VELVET SOUND for Cars, with its new premium DAC and the Audio DSP range.
