TIDAL Introduces MQA Streaming “Master Audio” Support

During CES 2017, TIDAL and MQA announced the much anticipated support for Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) on their streaming service. Until now only available on file-based downloads, the bandwidth efficient high-resolution audio format (HRA) is now available on a mainstream platform. TIDAL was previously the only music streaming service to offer a “higher-quality” subscription option. Those subscribers will now be able to access MQA encoded masters.

The new M20 Hi-Res DAP is slimmer and lighter than the brand’s previous flagship model, the AR-M2, and is even more affordable, with 32GB of internal storage and expansion using Micro SDXC cards (up to 256GB). Essentially, the new M20 focuses on the quality of its audio circuits and DAC, offering a “less is more” approach.

Sony continued the High-Res Audio focus at IFA 2016, as shown at CES 2016 earlier this year. At the Berlin show, Sony introduced the new MDR-1000X Wireless Headphones with improved noise cancellation performance, while at the same time releasing its Ultimate 'Signature Series' Audio Range, combining reference MDR-Z1R headphones, NW-WM1Z and NW-WM1A Walkman players, and the TA-ZH1ES headphone amplifier. Unveiled for later release was Sony’s first hearable, the Xperia Ear.

The Latest BluOS firmware will power select high performance NAD models with MQA for studio quality music streams in the home. Japanese Label UNAMAS Chooses MQA Format to Showcase Hi-Res Recordings

UNAMAS, the Japanese hi-res music label run by award-winning recording engineer, Mick Sawaguchi, has selected ten albums from their catalogue for encoding in MQA. The recordings, ranging from Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” performed by the Unamas String Quintet, to Hiroshi Fukamizu’s “Everything for Drums”, will be available from July 15 on music download service, e-onkyo music, priced at ¥3.000 ($29 / £19) each.

Listeners Are Effectively Able to Find Audible Differences with High-Resolution Audio

A new study by Dr. Joshua Reiss of the Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), published in the June issue of the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society (JAES), concludes that in the majority of cases listeners can hear a difference between standard audio and better-than-CD quality, known as high-resolution audio (HRA). The study, involving over 12,000 different trials, is the first to apply formal meta-analysis techniques to audio engineering research.
