Canadian Loudspeaker Brand PSB Speakers Celebrates 50 Years of Hi-Fi Sound

PSB Speakers, the loudspeaker company that created the “Canadian Sound”, is celebrating 50 years of delivering high value hi-fi speakers at the intersection of science-based sound reproduction and musical enjoyment. Founded in St Jacob’s, Ontario, in the summer of 1972 by classically-trained violinist and self-taught acoustics designer, Paul Barton, and a couple of his high school friends, PSB Speakers soon became a pioneer in marrying psychoacoustics research with loudspeaker design.

In this article, the authors share their research on new requirements for the measurement of in-wall installation speakers. The directional characteristics are an especially important factor, because the direction in which a loudspeaker emits sound highly affects the interaction with the listening room and the listening experience. The authors' research addressed the requirement using holographic directivity to address the way the directional characteristics interact with the listening room. This article reviews a patent granted to Apple, describing an electronic audio device including an enclosure having an acoustic output opening and a speaker positioned within the enclosure, as implemented in the company’s range of iMac desktop computers. The speaker and the acoustic output opening are acoustically coupled by an acoustic output pathway and damping chamber. ProSource, the US audio, video, and integration buying group, announced at its ProSource Summer Conference that JBL is once again pushing reimagined home audio classics. JBL introduced its L75ms Music System, a modern reimagining of the traditional hi-fi system, now with wired and wireless connectivity, a classic walnut wood veneer cabinet finish and black Quadrex foam grille. Also new is the JBL L52 Classic bookshelf loudspeaker, available with Quadrex foam grilles in a choice of black, blue, or orange.
