Qualcomm’s NXP Acquisition and Impact for the Audio Industry

With rumors already circulating for some time, on October 27, 2016, Qualcomm announced a definitive agreement, unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies, under which Qualcomm will acquire NXP Semiconductors. With the acquisition, Qualcomm gets access to a vast portfolio of solutions from the Dutch giant, which was once Philips Semiconductors and remains until now a leading supplier of key technologies for mobile devices and wireless and wired audio applications.

The Audio Engineering Society’s Audio Guidelines for Over the Top Television and Video Streaming (AGOTTVS) technical group was formed in early 2016 to study the many issues related to audio loudness variations in distributed video content. After four-and-a-half months of work by 50 members, the group has announced the publication of preliminary guidelines.

The famous audio equipment brand from Cambridge, Massachusetts, Acoustic Research (now part of Voxx International) released a new portable high-resolution audio (HRA) digital player. The new M20 Hi-Res DAP is slimmer and lighter than the brand’s previous flagship model, the AR-M2, and is even more affordable, with 32GB of internal storage and expansion using Micro SDXC cards (up to 256GB). Essentially, the new M20 focuses on the quality of its audio circuits and DAC, offering a “less is more” approach.
