Sun Audio Unveils Purified 4 Desktop Modular Speakers and Plug & Play System

Sun Audio has released a version of the Purified 4 modular speakers with a smaller tri-pod stand for desktop applications. The Purified 4 Desktop speakers are also available with a choice of Purifi Audio 4-inch woofers and BlieSMa 25mm tweeters. Every variant includes a crossover profile tuned for optimal tonal balance. Sun Audio is also now proposing an Hypex NCore integrated amplifier and DSP solution, designed in cooperation with Nord Acoustics, and which can also power a pair of Atohm 9 compact subwoofers.
  Netherlands based Sun Audio has been selling successfully its Purified 4 modular speakers, which can be used with an external crossover and power amplifiers, as most hifi audio enthusiasts prefer. But as the company started promoting this modular speaker concept, offering buyers a choice of two different Purifi 4" woofers and different tweeters from BlieSMa, it also engaged with other audio companies to expand possible options for those wishing to buy a Plug & Play system.

The modular Purified 4 two-way spherical design, with its tri-pod speaker stand manufactured from steel, and rubber hemispheres placed on both ends of the pods, captivated a market robust enough to encourage the company to expand its options. Now, the Dutch company introduced the Purified 4 Desktop model, with a smaller tri-pod stand, allowing users to place the speakers on a bookshelf, tabletop or working desk. Otherwise everything is exactly the same.

The internal aluminum enclosure reduces unwanted resonances to a minimum, while the external spherical shape ensures the most uniform radiation pattern, delivering an exceptionally linear frequency response and excellent imaging. These sealed spherical structures are actually cylindrical inside, and filled with Twaron Angel Hair damping material. The internal volumes are matched with the selected Purifi driver, and all models are tuned to a Butterworth (B2) | Qtc ≈ 0.707 'maximally flat response' alignment. Driver variants remain a Purifi 4" Aluminum or Fiber Paper Mix midwoofer and a choice between the BlieSMa 25mm Aluminum-Magnesium or a Beryllium tweeter. These state of the art drivers have a very low non-linear distortion while able to produce high SPL and excellent dynamics. For each variant, a measurement data set and reference crossover design (DSP parameters) are included in the delivery. As Sun Audio explains, each crossover design is fine tuned to deliver the best possible tonality, while the smooth directivity supports a very effective room correction or EQ if needed.

All Purified 4 modular speakers are available with a Bloodwood solid wood or Black thermoplastic cover, sandwiched between a Jet Black powder coated aluminum front and rear baffle. For the wood models, since each cabinet will have its own distinctive appearance, Sun Audio matches enclosure pairs during the manufacturing process, to ensure a similar look. However, no pair will look exactly the same. Several pieces of cork-rubber are placed between the aluminum cylinder and the solid wood to absorb any expansion or contraction.
Again, users have the freedom to use these loudspeaker systems with their own crossover and amplifiers, or select a complete solution from Sun Audio, which now also includes a pair of subwoofers designed in cooperation with French high-end driver specialists Atohm. For those who do not wish to configure a DSP crossover and need amplifiers, then Sun Audio offers an Integrated Amplifier with pre-installed DSP profiles as a Plug & Play solution.

The result of a cooperation with UK based Nord Acoustics for the Sun Audio Purified 4 speakers, the new Nord DSP-DAC NCAS500MP Amplifier features Hypex NCore amplification with onboard Hypex DSP and DAC built-in. The DSP profiles for the Purified 4 loudspeakers are pre-loaded to offer an easy to use, Plug & Play solution. The Nord DSP-DAC NCAS500MP also has both digital and analog inputs, powered outputs for the tweeters and midwoofers, and subwoofer outputs (RCA). A remote control is included in the package.

And Sun Audio also added a compact 9" passive subwoofer set to its product line. The Atohm 9 subwoofer is a sealed aluminum enclosure with an internal volume of only 8,5 liter, with a minimalistic industrial look and black powder coated finish. These custom-designed compact subwoofers will add the bass extension that benefits each of the Purified 4 speakers, effectively acting as a 3-way system - the reason why Sun Audio offers these as a pair. The ANSI/CEA2010-B rating for the Atohm 9 is 110dB (1m), it has 82dB sensitivity and can handle a peak power of 1200W. As Sun Audio states, "in case you need more SPL capability, you can add another pair and stack them. Depending on the capacity of your amplifier, two to three units can be configured in parallel."

In terms of pricing, a complete Sun Audio Purified 4 Desktop with the Nord DSP-DAC NCAS500MP amplifier set will retail from $5,234.00 USD, with the pair of Atohm 9 subs adding another $2,300.00 USD. The standmount model adds another $270 USD. Sun Audio should be called Fun Audio, because that's more in line with what they are doing.
