PSI Audio Updates Flagship Three-Way A25-M Studio Monitors for 2021

Swiss manufacturer PSI Audio announced a new version of its flagship three-way speaker A25-M for 2021. Following on the improvements announced in 2019 with the flow guide introduced in the A23-M monitor, and a larger, more powerful woofer engine, the A25-M boasts an entirely new midrange driver. The Extended Dome Driver (EXD) combines a larger dome and new cone formula, effectively offering the best of both worlds in the process. The new driver system is still mounted to a rotatable baffle to enable vertical or horizontal speaker placement at optimum dispersion.

As PSI Audio details further, the updated A25-M studio monitor design is also supported by the combined effect of the company's proprietary technologies, including Class G/H amplifiers, Compensated Phase Response (CPR), Adaptive Output Impedance (AOI) and Acoustic Load Guide (ALG), plus the new EXD driver design, allowing the all-analogue A25-M to achieve the most precise sound reproduction possible.

For this major evolution of the A25-M, the company focused on developing the brand new 5" (142mm) midrange driver, starting from scratch by building both a new dome and cone material. The result of this two-year research effort was the Extended Dome Driver (EXD), which PSI Audio says keeps the advantages of both construction types while eliminating the disadvantages.

"When applied to the midrange, dome drivers tend to become either unstable in the middle of the dome, or too heavy due to more rigid material being used, and they can only ever offer a very limited bandwidth in the low end. Cone drivers, on the other hand, pose a relatively large weight in their composition of membrane, dust cap, spider and suspension, which limits SPL and can cause distortion. They also restrict airflow with heavy basket designs. Even the dust cap can add distortion to the reproduction," the company explains.

"Our EXD midrange driver developed for the A25-M, however, combines a 4-inch, latex-and-graphite-infused paper cone membrane with a light polypropylene dome. And both are directly connected to the voice coil. With the dimensions and weight ratio of coil and membranes optimized in this way, our EXD offers higher SPL at lower distortion, pushing the new A25-M even closer towards perfect accuracy. Furthermore the new driver is built directly onto the rotatable baffle with no basket at all."

Otherwise, the updated A25-M extends even further what is recognized as the brand's flagship loudspeaker, serving as a mid-field to main reference monitor with precision frequency and phase responses, and improved stereo image. This is a full analog three-way (170 + 80 + 50 watts) active system that is able to offer a frequency response from 28Hz to 23kHz with a maximum SPL@1m of 110dB. When measured as a pair, the A25-M's deliver an incredible 122dB max SPL. Topping the larger and more powerful 10" woofer, the driver configuration also includes the hand made tweeter with updated waveguide and tweeter-mid unit that can be swiveled 90° for horizontal use.

When used with one of PSI's subwoofers, the A25-M evolves into an extended 4-way system, with ultra precise control on all the frequencies. PSI Audio recommends matching the A25-M's with two matching compact Sub A125-M extensions or its full range Sub A225-M.

The new A25-M (2021) is now available in PSI red, black and white finishes. Each A25-M speaker is handmade and individually calibrated in Switzerland, and offers 5 years warranty.
