Dolby Laboratories and MStar Semiconductor, a semiconductor company for display and digital home solutions, announced a solution that will make it easier to implement immersive Dolby Atmos experiences on consumer TV sets worldwide. MStar has made available the latest iteration of Dolby Multistream Decoder MS12, which provides TV manufacturers with a single-package solution for decoding premium audio content — broadcast, file-based, OTT/VOD services, and pay-TV operators.

This is the first generally available integrated circuit (IC) in the world to support MS12 v2.2 GA as well as Dolby Vision, enabling OEMs across the globe to bring the latest in advanced audiovisual experiences to mainstream TVs.

A leap forward from surround sound, Dolby Atmos delivers a breakthrough experience that leverages the latest Dolby advances in sound technology. MStar’s adoption of MS12 v2 will make it possible for OEMs to integrate the key benefits of Dolby Atmos – including encompassing sound, lifelike nuance, and crisply rendered speech – directly into the TV. TV OEMs will now be able to offer precise placement and movement of individual sounds without the need for external speakers, further simplifying the process of experiencing Dolby Atmos.

“MStar has been a consistent early adopter of Dolby technologies,” says Sean Lin, Corporate VP, MStar. “We’re proud to yet again be first to market with a solution that will enable OEMs to easily integrate Dolby Atmos into their TV product lines.”

“We’re delighted with MStar’s continued commitment to bringing breathtaking, encompassing sound to more people,” says Giles Baker, SVP, Consumer Entertainment Group, Dolby Laboratories. “We look forward to working closely with the large number of our TV OEM partners who will now be able to use MStar’s ICs to deliver the Dolby Atmos experience to consumers, in addition to Dolby Vision.”

The Dolby Multistream Decoder MS12 reduces the complexity of integrating multiple audio technologies, and provides a consistent volume level across programs and sources to make listening more enjoyable. Dolby MS12 decodes all audio formats required to match worldwide and specific local broadcast standards, from Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, HE-AAC v2, all AAC bitstreams, and Dolby AC-4 with full metadata support, paving the way for next-generation audio experiences. The solution supports audio description services, and generates standard Dolby Audio bitstreams up to 7.1 channels from any incoming audio format, and creates standard two-channel downmix. The Dolby MS12 also supports bass enhancement, speaker tuning, virtual surround, and speech-gated dialogue enhancement.

Dolby Atmos is currently supported in over ten major streaming and pay-TV services, including Netflix and Vudu, with over 200 home releases to date mixed in Dolby Atmos.
