LYNX Technik Incorporates AI Technology from Audionamix for Real-Time Complex Noise Removal in Hardware

April 22 2022, 00:30
Among the many announcements of more hardware purposely designed for broadcast and content production operations, at the NAB 2022 Show in Las Vegas, German company Lynx Technik AG unveiled a new hardware module in its renowned yellobrik series, that features Artificial Intelligence from Audionamix. The IDC (Instant Dialog Cleaner) 1411 yellobrik module was designed for operations with serial digital video signals, and incorporates the AI technology from Audionamix for effective noise removal directly in the signal flow.

This level of innovation is to be expected from a company such as Lynx Technik, specializing in the development of high quality products for the professional and broadcast market, with an engineering team that holds a vast experience in operations and designing "problem-solving" products. And not surprisingly, they reached out to the audio separation experts at Audionamix in order to offer another valuable problem-solver.

Audionamix operates from Paris and Los Angeles, and has long been a pioneer in advanced signal processing and AI for audio analysis and separation. But until now Audionamix has focused mainly on software products for studio and music production, recently including also an on demand web application for automated stem separation. Obviously, the availability of enough processing power and edgeAI hardware solutions, enables also the integration of these advanced processes directly on-device, and this product basically runs the Audionamix Instant Dialogue Cleaner software plugin... in real-time.

In this case, LYNX Technik is offering integration directly in its line of modular signal processing interfaces. The new IDC 1411 Instant Dialog Cleaner yellobrik module, is designed to isolate speech and dialog by removing complex background noises in SDI signals from live broadcasts as well as recorded audio. Inside the yellobrik hardware there is enough power to run Deep Neural Networks (DNN) AI technology from Audionamix and solving many audio challenges that arise in broadcast and professional AV environments — in real time.

With the help of Audionamix technology, the IDC 1411 analyzes audio and removes (in real-time) background noises, including road and air traffic, nature sounds, music and other ambient noises. This audio cleaning process separates the dialog and speech from the noises, providing a crisp audio signal that only contains the spoken word. The AI technology automatically detects the voice regardless of the surrounding noises and preserves the real integrity of the dialog, unlike other available noise reduction tools, which are often not adequate.

As LYNX Technik highlights, this tool is especially useful for live broadcasts, recording, editing and mixing audio from noisy broadcast and AV environments. For example, commentators reporting in noisy stadiums, journalists reporting news in outdoor settings, etc. Other application examples include parallel production of content for hearing impaired viewers or improved production of automated closed captions with clearer audio. Like many other yellobriks, the IDC 1411 is supported by the new yellobrik RCT 1012 Rack Controller, enabling monitoring, parameter adjustment and third party automation via an Ethernet network or VPN, from any workstation.

The IDC 1411 is also compatible with LynxCentraal and yelloGUI, LYNX Technik’s free software applications that offer users advanced settings for yellobriks and other LYNX Technik products. As an example, the model processes uncompressed SDI video formats via BNC or fiber, and AES based audio via BNC. The SDI Output can be routed to fiber or BNC via the Lynx Centraal control software. When connected to a control terminal via LynxCentraal or yelloGUI, the IDC 1411 has additional audio control features for the IDC settings, two sequential equalizers, and a compressor. Two fully parametric peak/notch equalizers are provided which are applied in series, and additionally each filter section has it‘s own gain settings.

The module is suitable for all SMPTE standard signals conforming to SMPTE 292M, 424M, and 2082 (1.5Gbit/s, 3Gbit/s, and 12Gbit/s).

LYNX Technik is a privately-owned company with its headquarters, research and manufacturing facilities based in Weiterstadt, Germany. Sales and Support is covered through secondary distribution channels managed from its headquarters in Germany, USA (California), and Asia (Singapore).
