Elliptic Labs Announces Support for Cirrus Logic Smart Boosted Audio Amplifiers

May 4 2021, 00:50
Elliptic Labs, the innovative Norwegian developer of software sensor solutions, announced a collaboration with Cirrus Logic to certify and optimize Elliptic Labs’ AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform on Cirrus Logic’s latest smart boosted amplifiers for smartphone, PC/laptop, and IoT customers. Elliptic Labs’ software sensors rely on microphones and speakers to generate and translate ultrasound tones, which benefit from Cirrus Logic new generation audio amplifiers.

Elliptic Labs’ Virtual Smart Sensors bring innovative user experiences like proximity and presence detection, as well as 3D touchless gesture sensing to next-generation devices. These Virtual Smart Sensors enable manufacturers to design the next-generation smart devices, which now can be powered by Cirrus Logic’s latest audio amplifier technology.

Elliptic Labs’ software-only AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform utilizes a device’s existing microphone and speaker to generate and translate ultrasound tones into Virtual Sensors with capabilities like presence and touchless gesture detection. These capabilities are valuable in applications for smartphones, tablets, and laptops, bringing security through automated screen locking, or intuitive controls for users enjoying music and videos.

In applications like proximity sensor, OEM smartphone manufacturers are able to design full-screen smartphones without hardware infrared (IR) sensors. In laptops presence sensors improve power conservation and security by putting the laptop to sleep and locking its screen when the user steps away. And presence detectors can be extremely important to make the automotive cabin a safer place, including detecting when small children (or pets) are left unattended. Gesture sensors are increasingly implemented in consumer electronics devices and automotive applications to extend the controls and interactions with screens and infotainment systems. And in the emerging category of smart speakers and even latest-generation audio systems, user interaction can be implemented without the need to touch any surface, using sensors for gestures or user detection. Same can be said for smart televisions and appliances to bring greater efficiency and convenience to users.

“Our teamwork with Cirrus Logic opens many new market opportunities by driving innovation with our AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform,” Laila Danielsen, CEO of Elliptic Labs, explains. “Exciting new user experiences like presence detection and touchless gestures will make next-generation devices smarter, and working together brings these capabilities to customers faster, while keeping cost and power consumption low.”

Elliptic Labs’ patented AI software combines ultrasound and sensor-fusion algorithms and are already deployed in over 150 million devices, running on platforms and processors from Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Infineon, Mediatek, AAC Technologies, Knowles, Intel and ARM.
