DPA Expands Lavalier Portfolio with 2061 Miniature Omni Microphone

September 13 2024, 09:10
DPA Microphones released its new 2061 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphone, a more affordable and non-modular solution, intended for professional-level sound capture of voice, in all of its nuances. Unveiled at IBC 2024 in Amsterdam, the 2061 is a professional lavalier that will meet any need for amazingly high-quality, in the best tradition of the Danish brand. It offers fantastic speech intelligibility combined with durable construction with sweat-repellent and water-resistant capabilities.

Danish Professional Audio, better known as DPA Microphones is admired for its extremely high-quality miniature lavalier microphones. In 2021, DPA's Jens-Jørn Stokholm and Ole Moesmann received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the development of its DPA 4061 and 4071 lavalier microphones, resulting in "consistent performance and exceptional on-set motion picture audio recording." These were the first miniature microphones developed by DPA from technology previously only used in hearing aids and measurement microphones. Already in 2018, DPA launched its 6000 Series Lavalier microphones, which includes the cutting-edge d:screet CORE 6060 and 6061 Subminiature Microphones - just three millimeters in diameter – and which the company didn't hesitate to call "its best ever made."

Now DPA decided to bring its technology to a more universal and affordable design, combining the reliability and sound qualities from those famous lavaliers, in a microphone that is within reach of a wider marker. That includes broadcast studios and ENG applications, theaters, event venues, or even content creators, in any live or recording application. For all those applications, the DPA 2061 lavalier is an easy-to-use solution that will still represent a significant upgrade.

"We launched the 2061 to appeal to audio professionals who are not yet part of the DPA family and are looking to upgrade their audio quality with a crystal-clear, no-frills microphone," says Helga Volha Somava, Product Management Director, DPA Microphones. "With its durable and rugged enclosure and premier DPA sound, the 2061 does not compromise on excellence. This is a great miniature microphone that is a worthy competitor to other well-known and widely used models."

The new DPA 2061 lavalier microphones launched at IBC 2024, here seen in a manikin with the more compact d:screet CORE 6060 and 4071 models.
Borrowing several design elements and principles from other DPA lavaliers, the 2061 features a completely new, simplified five millimeters capsule construction that targets superior performance in the 50Hz to 16kHz frequency range, able to sustain 128dB SPL peaks. With an omnidirectional pickup pattern, this pre-polarized condenser microphone is designed to accurately capture the human voice with minimal coloration and a high level of fidelity and intelligibility, from any direction.

The DPA 2061 has a flat frequency curve with a soft 3dB boost at 8kHz – 16kHz. The mic is not pre-tailored to compensate for any specific position in which a lavalier is commonly placed, which allows sound engineers to capture authentic sound from any arrangement. Additionally, the 2061 features the same durability, andd repairability that users have come to expect of the DPA brand. This is best exemplified in the 1.5 meter-long (4.5 ft), Kevlar reinforced cable, with long and flexible strain relief for resilience against physical stress, as well as the microphone’s advanced sweat-repelling capabilities and IP57 certification for exposure to water, dust and makeup. It also offers ease of cleaning for a prolonged life.

In contrast to some of DPA's higher modular solutions, the 2061 has a fixed cap and includes permanent connector options that are compatible with 3-pin LEMO, TA4F and Mini-Jack. These features provide an easier to use solution, especially in a chaotic work environment that requires a quick and smooth result.

The 2061 is also available in multiple colors — black, white, beige and brown, allowing it to blend in with any actor, talking head, outfit or costume. With black and white clip options, the microphone also offers quick, secure mounting, perfect for fast-moving content creation applications. Compatible with the brand’s 2061, 6060 and 6061 lavaliers, the SCM0035 Lavalier Microphone Clip offers integrated cable management, 360-degree mic rotation for the desired angle and an easy to open clamp with non-slip surface that does not slide off attire.

Additionally, the recently launched AIR1 Universal Miniature Fur Windscreen is an ideal accessory for the 2061 in windy, outdoor applications, while the SCM0030 and SCM0034 clips, and DUA056 series of foam windscreens are also compatible with the microphone.

As part of DPA’s new environmental initiatives, the company has begun to focus on reducing the impact of its packaging and shipping, and opted to offer a reusable, resealable pouch for the 2061 that provides a practical advantage, with less weight and volume for shipment. The 2061 comes with a two-year limited warranty.
