Weiss Engineering launched a firmware update for its Weiss DAC502 and DAC501, D/A converters with DSP, and the dedicated DSP501 and DSP502 DSP and network renderer models. With that update, unveiled in July 2021, the Swiss company introduced advanced Headphone EQ profiles for selected Audeze models. The Californian headphone manufacturer now recommends it as "the perfect combination for mastering engineers and producers."
Audeze says that the Weiss Series 5 devices, and specifically the DAC 502 DAC+headphone amplifier with the new firmware that is now available and includes headphone target frequency curves for Audeze headphones, is a solution that should be considered for studio use by mastering engineers and producers. "The 502’s impeccable build quality and fidelity when combined with Audeze headphones, makes it the perfect mastering engineer’s and/or producer’s solution," Audeze states.
"This new update means that when working on a track that was recorded with one Audeze headset, but now being worked on with another Audeze headset - it can be heard exactly as that track was originally recorded - regardless of the Audeze headset used," they add. The brand also praises the powerful DSP system in the Weiss DAC 502, which also includes many additional features like Room Equalization, De-essing, Vinyl emulation, Crosstalk cancellation, Loudness Control, Crossfeed (to emulate a speaker based playback impression on headphones), and is ROON Ready.
The product of Daniel Weiss' lifelong dedication, recently awarded with a 2021 Technical Grammy, the Series 5 range of processors features exclusive algorithms developed by the company through the years - including many features that are considered some of the industry's best kept secrets in mastering, and were originally developed and available in its professional series of products.
The new firmware for the Weiss DAC502, DAC501, DSP501, and DSP502 models, introduced the new Headphone Equalizer features and also a patented loudness processor. The advanced target frequency curves covers a large range of Audeze headphones. Users can just select the connected Audeze headphone model, covering all the respected LCD planar magnetic models, and enjoy listening with the effects of a frequency response compensation equalizer, with curves directly provided by Audeze.
The new Weiss Loudness Equalizer enhances the sonic characteristics at selectable listening levels between 60dB and 105dB. This is a premier implementation of a patented design by Bernhard Schwede, based on psychoacoustics and anatomical theory. It does not adhere to the commonly used Fletcher-Munson frequency responses but uses a completely new approach. Basically this equalization consists of seven bands with predefined parameters deduced from Schwede’s design. Ten different setting options can be selected depending on the current listening level in dB, compensating for the different environments.
The new firmware can be downloaded free of charge directly to the Weiss units via a web interface. The company also updated the (valuable) user manuals.
