Synopsys Introduces First Complete DesignWare USB4 IP Solution With Support for All Features in the USB4 Specification

Start the USB4 roll out! Synopsys, introduced the industry's first complete DesignWare USB4 IP solution consisting of controllers, routers, PHYs, and verification IP. The DesignWare USB4 IP operates at up to 40 Gbps, which is twice the maximum data rate of USB 3.2 and is backwards compatible with USB 3.x and USB 2.0 systems. The DesignWare USB4 IP supports multiple high-speed interface protocols, including USB4, DisplayPort 1.4a TX, PCI Express, and Thunderbolt 3 for efficient data transfer and simultaneous delivery of data, power, and high-resolution video through a single USB Type-C cable.

This year, I was really looking forward to meeting with the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), the support organization for the advancement and adoption of USB technology, and discuss their projects for the USB4 Specification, the really big, gigantic update story on that front (at least in consumer electronics) since CES last year. The USB-IF announced the publication of the latest and greatest USB4 specification in September 2019, offering a major update to the USB architecture that complements and builds upon the existing USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 architectures. USB-IF Announces Publication of USB4 Specification that Doubles Bandwidth to Extend USB Type-C Performance

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced the publication of the USB4 specification, a major update to deliver the next-generation USB architecture that complements and builds upon the existing USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 architectures. The USB4 architecture is based on the Thunderbolt protocol specification contributed by Intel to the USB Promoter Group. It doubles the maximum aggregate bandwidth of USB and enables multiple simultaneous data and display protocols.

USB4 includes two-lane operation using the existing USB Type-C connector that can carry up to 40Gbps data over new certified cables. Cadence Design Systems announced the availability of the industry’s first Verification IP (VIP) in support of the recently announced USB4 standard. The Cadence VIP for USB4 enables engineers to develop standard-compliant system-on-chip (SoC) designs, completing functional verification of the design with less effort and greater assurance that the SoC will operate as expected, enabling early adoption of the next-generation USB standard protocol.
