The market for hearing aids is going to be driven by over-the-counter sales, according to the latest research from analyst SAR Insight & Consulting. This assertion is given weight by the news that Bose — a market leader in home audio, headphones, and automotive audio systems —is the first company to be FDA approved for a patent on OTC hearing aids. As a result, many companies are diverting their attention to the medical hearing aid market.

The retail headphone market continues to show strength, with 365 million units shipped in 2019, according to SAR Insight & Consulting’s Latest Headphone and Headset Forecast DATAbase. Wireless headphones and in particular true wireless stereo (TWS) models continue to be the fastest growing categories, with shipments of gaming headphones doubling from a year ago. Consequences for the electronics component industry are also visible, such as the growth in the sales of MEMS microphones.

Austrian sensor specialist ams announced the world’s smallest 2-in-1 IR proximity sensor module, paving the way to smaller, lighter, and always-available True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds. The ultra-small package of the new ams TMD2635 module measures just 1mm3, and enables ear detection triggers to help extend battery life between charges. Two TMD2635 modules can be used in tandem to enable touchless gesture controls.

Dialog Semiconductor announced that its audio and Configurable Mixed Signal ICs (CMICs) have been adopted by Huawei for their Honor FlyPods, the company’s latest True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds. Five Dialog ICs provide voice control and power to Huawei’s recently announced TWS earbuds. A Dialog’s SmartBeat DA14195 System-on-Chip (SoC) is integrated into each FlyPod earbud and is connected to a pair of Voice Pick Up (VPU) sensors.
