Xperi Announces New Effort to Promote DTS Play-Fi in Home Theater Market

DTS, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xperi Holding Corporation, announced the intention to revitalize its proprietary DTS Play-Fi wireless audio platform in order to promote wireless surround sound as an alternative to the Wireless Speaker and Audio Association (WiSA) technology being adopted in mainstream consumer electronics. While Qualcomm has long forgotten about its AllPlay wireless audio solution, DTS believes there is still an opportunity to compete with WiSA.

NAD Electronics announced the new and improved NAD Masters M10 V2 BluOS Streaming Amplifier, which continues its “just add speakers” revolution of Hi-Fi. The M10 V2 features 100 watts per channel of amplification and BluOS streaming capabilities, and adds the capability to expand with Dolby Digital Surround decoding, an enclosed IR remote control, and updated gain algorithms. It ships globally in August 2021 and will retail for US $2,749.

Hisense Joins DTS Play-Fi Whole-Home Wireless Audio Ecosystem

DTS is still much at play in wireless audio with its Play-Fi technology. The company that is now a part of Xperi and just merged with TiVo, announced that Hisense is joining its DTS Play-Fi whole-home audio ecosystem. With a rapidly growing presence in the US and Europe, Hisense’s partnership with DTS will bring additional wireless interoperability in consumer electronics. Hisense will design and manufacture Play-Fi enabled products to be globally distributed in the second half of 2021.

Patent Review: Single Enclosure Surround Sound Loudspeaker

James Croft reviews a patent claimed by Polk Audio and granted in 2015, describing “a single-enclosure loudspeaker system that projects multichannel surround sound into a listener’s room, and so replaces multiple conventional surround channel loudspeakers.” The patent also describes, in one embodiment of the invention, that the “surround channel program material is pre-processed by an integrated wireless transmission device that performs certain digital signal processing and channel mixing steps in advance of wireless surround signal broadcast to a receiver.” This article was originally published in Voice Coil, January 2015.
