Eighteen Sound sent us an unusual driver for this Test Bench, because it is specifically intended for use with the new generation of Class-D digital amplifiers that can drive extremely low impedance loads. While Eighteen Sound has several models in this configuration, this month we are testing the 18” model, the 18iD, developed in accordance with Powersoft Audio’s IPAL standards. Test Bench: Wavecor SW146WA01-02 5.75-inch Subwoofers

This month I examined two new 5.75” subwoofers from Wavecor, both the 4-Ω SW146WA01 and the 8-Ω SW146WA02 version. Wavecor’s SW146WA, in both the 8-Ω and 4-Ω versions, have a well-conceived feature set that includes a proprietary four-spoke stamped steel frame that incorporates an eight-spoke/eight-window configuration below the spider mounting shelf. This open eight-spoke region, along with a 13-mm diameter pole vent, provides substantial cooling for the SW146WA. This article was originally published in Voice Coil, July 2015.

This article, a Danish blueprint for an “invisible” subwoofer was originally published in audioXpress July 2006 and it is the first of two by Bjorn Johannesen. In this first article, the author describes a successful transmission line to replace a vented sub, inspired by Rick Schultz articles. A project where the first approach revealed a resonance frequency lower than expected — lower than the driver’s Fs, leading him to study Martin J. King’s quarter wave design.

Dayton Audio sent a pair of new shallow-mount home/car audio subwoofers, the 10” LS10-44 and the 12” LS12-44. Both subwoofers are less than 4” deep. Since these are 10” and 12” versions of the same concept, Vance Dickason decided to analyze the Dayton Audio LS10/12 together rather than separately.
