I wrote a whitepaper looking at the principles of digital signal processing, algorithms,and software that improve hearing for people with hearing loss. This article is intended as an introduction. The complete whitepaper is available for download. The inspiration for this whitepaper comes from the World Health Organization's recent World Report on Hearing (WHO), which shows that 1.5 billion people worldwide have some degree of hearing loss and 430 million people need rehabilitation services. Shockingly, less than 3% (on average worldwide) use hearing aids.

Australian hearable pioneers Nuheara announced that the company has received the "historic and first of its kind" FDA 510(k) premarket clearance for both an 874.3325 Self-fitting Hearing Aid and the 800.30 Over The Counter (OTC) hearing aid classification. This gives clearance for Nuheara to launch a "Self-Fitting Air-Conduction Hearing Aid, Over The Counter" product, which will be launched in the US market as the HP Hearing PRO.

It didn't take long. A month past from the partnership agreement announcement between Sony Corporation and WS Audiology Denmark A/S with the aim of jointly developing and supplying new products and services in the OTC self-fitting hearing aid market, Sony has already announced the first two products for the Over-the-Counter (OTC) hearing aids space in the US market. Following the FDA release of the anticipated Over-the-Counter (OTC) hearing aid regulations, with intent to increase access for people with untreated hearing loss, the GN Group immediately announced its support to that ambition. Hearables’ Shipments to Exceed 200 Million Globally by 2024, Juniper Research Predicts

A new study by Juniper Research has found that hearables’ shipments will exceed 200 million units by 2024, up from 165 million in 2022; representing total growth of 30% over the next two years. The market research firm sees assistive and healthcare-focused hearables segments — typified by Nuheara’s IQbuds and Bose’s SoundControl Hearing Aids — are key to this growth; comprising 18% of hearables shipments by 2024, compared to 12% in 2021.
