Patent Review: Low-Profile Loudspeaker Transducer

This review looks at a patent awarded in October 2016 to George Bullimore, on behalf of Tymphany. Considering the number of patents on shallow drivers, and the fact that the inventor also previously developed transducers for Harman International and holds other key patents, this is no doubt an interesting document to analyze in depth. Over the course of three days and two nights, June 8–10, the Audio Engineering Society’s 2022 International Automotive Audio Conference in Dearborn, MI, served as a great event for everyone in the automotive audio community to reconnect. The event also featured a full track of sessions promoted by the AES Audio Product Education Institute (APEI). Test Bench: The Peerless by Tymphany PMT-40N25AL01-04 Mini Full-Range Driver

The 1" diameter full-range drivers are among the most used transducers in consumer electronics. They are finding broad use in numerous Bluetooth speakers. The driver submitted by Tymphany for this Test Bench fits into that category. The Peerless by Tymphany PMT-40N25AL01-04 is a 25-mm (1”) diameter full-range driver built on a proprietary injection-molded two-piece polycarbonate (one piece for the motor assembly structure and one piece for the protective grill).
