Test Bench-Wavecor’s FR4X6WA01 Oval Full-Range Driver

This article characterizes the FR4X6WA01, another very interesting full-range driver from Wavecor. The small oval diaphragm driver is built on a proprietary injection molded polymer four-spoke frame with the cone assembly consisting of a black anodized aluminum cone, with a round black anodized aluminum dust cap. Powering the cone assembly is a dual neodymium motor with a copper cap shorting ring and a milled return cup with black emissive coating.

This Test Bench characterizes the 6CXN36 6.5" coincident coax transducer, a professional audio driver from Italian manufacturer B&C Speakers and fairly similar to the company's 5.25” 5CXN44 reviewed in Voice Coil, August 2021, which uses a nearly identical compression driver. The cooling for the 6CXN36 is exclusively provided by the motor mass, which is substantial, and no vents are required for the impressive 200W continuous power handling rating in a small diameter driver such as this.

The intriguing W4-2356 driver from Tang Band Speaker (TB Speaker) is built on a proprietary and patented injection-molded polymer four-spoke frame that allows the voice coil not to be centered in the 4" injection-molded polypropylene cone, but offset by about half inch. The aim for this original off-axis design, is to defeat concentric cone modes, a well-known source of coloration in round voice coil transducers. The Faital Pro HF1460 features a carbon fiber diaphragm, which Faital Pro has been researching for some time, even before the first TeXtreme products were available in the market. The horn supplied for use with the HF1460 was the LTH142, an injection-molded, elliptical tractrix flare horn, with a 60° x 50° coverage pattern. The remainder of this issue is centered on Test Bench characterizations of two very innovative drivers that Vance Dickason has received. This is a Test Bench of one of the most intriguing high-frequency drivers from SB Acoustics' high-end Satori line, the MD60N-6 2.5" dome midrange. This design by Danesian Audio of Denmark, is a soft dome midrange that features a non-resonant coated cloth, and a large neodymium ring magnet with a dynamic dome stabilizer and flow resistor. There is also an injection-molded back-closed transmission line enclosure, filled with Thinsulate damping, mounted directly on the back side, covering its entire surface.
