Fresh From the Bench: Sennheiser AMBEO Immersive Soundbar Raising the Bar

The Sennheiser AMBEO soundbar is a sophisticated multi-speaker integrated home cinema sound system, created in collaboration with Fraunhofer IIS to be one of the world’s best soundbars. It is a single all-in-one device that is able to generate a convincing immersive soundfield from home entertainment sources that are able to render object-based audio formats such as Dolby Atmos or MPEG-H, from movies, games, music, or TV content. And this is because the large size soundbar offers 13 high-end drivers, a frequency response down to 30 Hz, and even ships with a measurement microphone for room calibration. Fraunhofer IIS Licenses MPEG-H Audio Patents to Samsung

Fraunhofer IIS announced the licensing of its MPEG-H Audio patents to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., allowing Samsung to manufacture products that feature MPEG-H Audio, including TVs and set-top-boxes. As the major contributor to the MPEG-H 3D Audio standard, Fraunhofer IIS is also leading the licensing efforts to enable the broadcast, mobile, media and streaming services and consumer electronics industries to quickly bring MPEG-H Audio to market.

Fraunhofer IIS Announces Licensing Efforts for New MPEG-H 3D Audio Baseline Profile

Fraunhofer IIS confirmed the release and official adoption of the MPEG-H 3D Audio Baseline Profile. The new profile was designed to exactly meet the business and technical needs of the industry and was announced during the MPEG WG11 131st meeting. Tailored for broadcast, streaming, and high-quality immersive music delivery use cases, the MPEG-H 3D Audio Audio Baseline profile supports channel and object signals and is a subset of the existing Low Complexity profile.

Fraunhofer IIS Licenses LC3 Audio Codec Software to Microsoft

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS announced the licensing of its LC3 software implementation to Microsoft Corp. LC3 (Low Complexity Communication Codec) is the audio codec adopted for Bluetooth LE Audio, a new audio architecture designed to boost the performance of Bluetooth Audio – for voice calls as well as for media playback including music. Following the news that Microsoft had licensed the xHE-AAC codec and MPEG-D DRC software implementation from Fraunhofer IIS, the addition of LC3 is a logic step.

Consumer devices powered by the latest Android, and Apple operating systems all support the most efficient AAC codec with mandatory MPEG-D DRC loudness and dynamic range control metadata – delivering a seamless streaming experience on any device in any environment. A rapidly growing number of platforms and playback devices already support xHE-AAC decoding natively, and now Microsoft can join the improved experience.

Fraunhofer IIS Licenses Comprehensive MPEG Audio Codec Suite to NXP Semiconductors

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, the inventor of mp3 and primary developer of the xHE-AAC and MPEG-H Audio standards, announced that NXP Semiconductors has licensed Fraunhofer’s MPEG audio SDK. The complete software package covers four generations of audio codecs, from legacy MPEG Layer-1/2/3 to the next-generation MPEG-H 3D Audio standard and the AAC codec family, including xHE-AAC. NXP will incorporate these codecs in home entertainment product development, from set-top boxes and soundbars to smart speakers.
