WiSA Announces Support of Dolby Atmos Height Channels

March 10 2020, 05:10
WiSA, the Wireless Speaker and Audio Association founded by Summit Wireless Technologies and supported by more than 60 leading consumer electronics brands, announced support of Dolby Atmos height channels, allowing WiSA speaker partners to develop products that include immersive 3D audio experiences made possible by Dolby Atmos technology. WiSA users will be able to assign front height, side height and rear height audio channels to WiSA Certified speakers, making it easy for consumers to configure their systems for Dolby Atmos content during set-up.

The announcement, which was highly anticipated and was one of the most discussed topics at any WiSA demonstration, will no doubt contribute to foster the adoption of the wireless audio technology even further. The announcement will contribute to WiSA's expansion in home theater installations, making the placement of height speakers for real Dolby Atmos experiences much more practical (sometimes the only option) in any home.

“We are very excited to create the opportunity for our TV and transmitter partners to send Atmos content wirelessly to WiSA Certified speakers as well as allow our speaker members to enhance their wireless audio assortments with Atmos solutions,” says Tony Ostrom, WiSA president. “Adding this capability answers requests we have received from WiSA members as well as consumers and we look forward to seeing WiSA Ready and WiSA Certified products in the field that dramatically simplify the process of creating three-dimensional immersive audio experiences in the home.”

The addition of Dolby Atmos height channels as options for a WiSA wireless audio system shows WiSA’s continued dedication to maintaining its leadership position in wireless home audio while providing versatile solutions that maintain an extremely high level of audio performance.

The ability for a user to select Dolby Atmos height channels will be included in the latest transmitter and speaker firmware, now scheduled for release in Q2 of 2020. Existing WiSA products can also take advantage of this feature through a firmware update.

WiSA, the (Wireless Speaker and Audio) Association is a consumer electronics consortium dedicated to creating interoperability standards utilized by leading brands and manufacturers to deliver immersive sound via intelligent devices. WiSA Certified components from any member brand can be combined to dramatically increase the enjoyment of movies and video, music, sports, gaming/esports, and more. WiSA also ensures robust, high resolution, multi-channel, low latency audio while eliminating the complicated set-up of traditional audio systems.
