Vesper Launches 2nd Generation Smart Piezoelectric Voice Accelerometer with ZeroPower Sensing

March 28 2022, 01:10
Vesper continues to redefine its range of MEMS solutions for voice applications with the launch of the VA1210, Vesper’s 2nd generation analog piezoelectric smart voice accelerometer. The VA1210 offers higher sensitivity (+17 dB) and higher (+6 dB) SNR than the 1st generation VA1200 in voice pickup. Additionally, new intelligent features of Wake-on-Voice (WoV) and hardware voice activity detection (HVAD), introduced into the VA1210, enable a drastic improvement of voice quality True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds.

Building on their success with the VA1200, released about one year ago, the piezoelectric MEMS sensors company, developed the VA1210 Smart Accelerometer with ZeroPower Sensing to boost the potential of a vibration and bone conduction sensor in TWS earbuds. The new Vesper VA1210 uses adaptive intelligence embedded directly in the sensor to analyze the acoustic environment and powers systems on only when needed. For TWS earbuds, the VA1210’s adds High-Fidelity VPU, Automute, Tap Detection, and Voice Authentication features that are critical for new highly-effective voice-enabled designs.

With Wake-on-Voice (WoV), the VA1210 can continuously monitor the TWS wearer for voice activity via bone conduction while consuming a scant 10µA of current thanks to Vesper’s patented ZeroPower Sensing (ZPS) technology. The VA1210 can accurately detect voice activity and only power on the system processor when voice is present. This gives TWS and other system designers the opportunity to dramatically cut average power consumption.
Like the 1st generation VA1200, the VA1210 retains the superb immunity to ambient sounds, and only picks up the user’s voice. In addition to being used as a bone conduction mic, the VA1210 is a superb low noise, high bandwidth, low power accelerometer for detecting vibration in AR (Augmented Reality) connected devices, automotive and industrial applications. The device's ZPS engine can be programmed to ideally suit the desired use case enabling applications in large area touch sensing, machine monitoring, leak detection and many others.

The VA1210 comes in the same tiny package (2.90×2.76×0.9mm3) as the VA1200. The VA1210 has differential analog output allowing more robust hardware designs. It is reflow solder compatible with no sensitivity degradation.

"The VA1210 provides the ideal trade-off between performance, power consumption and cost. The ZeroPower Sensing engine allows hardware designers to improve the system efficiency and drastically reduces software development time. With the proliferation of TWS, AR/VR and IoT devices we expect to see a lot of adoption of VA1210 in the market," says Senior Director of Marketing Roberto Condorelli.

The VA1210 is available in volume and mass production.

Vesper OnePlusOne is the combination of one Microphone plus one Voice Accelerometer and both are combined through the software sensor Fusion Library, removing ambient noise. This “turn key” solution and architecture is already supported by the largest Bluetooth chipset, partners and leaders in the TWS market.
