Sonos Introduces Significantly Improved Move 2 Portable Speaker

September 8 2023, 00:35
Sonos debuted Move 2, the next generation of its original Move portable speaker, now with a dual tweeter design that delivers a more spacious stereo image, improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and new touch controls. But the improved Move 2 also features an expanded battery life for up to 24 hours, a new Wireless Charging Base (included), plus new USB-C Line in and USB-C device charging, which expands its possibilities considerably. The Move 2 is rated IP56 for dust and water resistance, making it perfect for outdoor use.

As the inventor of multiroom wireless home audio, Sonos has always innovated in the way it designs products that combine great audio quality with easy access to content, and great control. While the original Sonos Move portable speaker was an important expansion of the company's line-up, creating for the first time a dedicated portable speaker that relied on Bluetooth when needed, it could still be used on its own or as part of a whole-home sound system with other Sonos speakers.

The new Sonos Move 2 expands that same concept, creating a premium portable speaker that improves the Sonos experience everywhere - from room to room, outdoors and beyond. It benefits from a completely new internal design and drivers for a more expansive sound that creates a better stereo image from a single source - also a more omnidirectional dispersion that sounds better outdoors. And the Move 2 also introduces sustainable design enhancements, leading Sonos to call it its most sustainable portable product to date.

"Since its 2019 launch, Move continues to be the best-selling speaker in its category thanks to its design, versatility and powerful sound," says Patrick Spence, CEO of Sonos. "We strive to create sound experiences that inspire deeper connections no matter who we’re with or where we are. Move 2 advances our commitment to immersive listening by bringing stereo sound to our most popular portable, featuring the same next-gen acoustics and design we debuted with the Era family."

For the Move 2 the Sonos audio engineering team upgraded the the original design inside and out to include all-new hardware and software with next-gen acoustics that deliver on the wider stereo sound using dual-tweeters and deep bass from a precision-tuned woofer. The concurrent Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities were updated now supporting stream via Bluetooth to a stereo pair of Move 2 speakers when connected to Wi-Fi or grouping a Move 2 with the rest of a Sonos system via Wi-Fi.

The Move 2 also offers up to 24 hours of battery life - double the playback time of the original Move - with a USB-C port that can charge a phone or electronics on the go, and also accepts external digital audio sources connected directly on that port. This unlocks new listening possibilities by connecting a turntable, computer, or a dedicated audio streamer directly to the speaker using the Sonos Line-In Adapter. And with automatic Trueplay tuning, the Move 2 continually optimizes the sound for its surroundings in order to provide the best listening experience, indoors or outdoors.

All those design improvements have all been balanced in terms of power consumption and sustainability. The Move 2 reduces idle energy usage by more than 40%, incorporates recycled plastics, and uses a removable and replaceable battery to extend its product life - all wrapped in a responsibly designed package that uses sustainably sourced material, zero virgin plastic and is curbside recyclable.

With its ultra durable design and IP56 rating, the new Sonos Move 2 is built to withstand accidental drops, splashes, rain, dirt, and sun. It also features new touch controls, using lessons from the intuitive user interface that Sonos recently launched with the Era products, including a capacitive volume slider for simple control. Other control options expand to Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, the Sonos app, Apple AirPlay2 and Bluetooth to play, pause, check the battery, and more.

The Sonos Move 2 will be available globally starting September 20, 2023 for $449. Speakers are available in an Olive colorway to complement neutral indoor and outdoor aesthetics, as well as Black and White to blend seamlessly with other Sonos products.
