Sennheiser Enters TWS Category with Bluetooth 5 Momentum True Wireless

Among the many headphone-related announcements made at IFA 2018 in Berlin, Sennheiser finally entered the true wireless stereo (TWS) category with its new Momentum True Wireless earbuds. As the company states "These exquisitely crafted Bluetooth earphones bring the uncompromised audio performance and iconic style of the Momentum headphone range to a truly wireless form for the first time." The company's entry in the TWS space uses an updated Bluetooth 5 platform in what is otherwise a refined, understated design.

At IFA, Sennheiser introduced the first model in a new generation of its iconic Momentum headphone family - the Momentum True Wireless, combining the range style and comfort with specifications that the german specialist says "redefines the audio benchmark for true wireless earbuds" with superior stereo sound performance ensured by Sennheiser’s own 7mm dynamic drivers.

Among the highlights, the new model features the latest Bluetooth 5 technology, AAC codec support as well as Qualcomm aptX and aptX Low Latency compatibility, while also providing a more intelligent, personalized experience. The option for aptX Low Latency enhances gaming or video content by keeping audio transmission perfectly in sync with the visuals. On the move, the Transparent Hearing powered by two beamforming MEMS microphones, allow users to hear ambient sounds for improved situational awareness, or for participating in conversations without removing the earbuds. As required in the current market, the new Momentum True Wireless also offer effortless interaction with the user’s digital ecosystem of choice by enabling direct voice access to smart assistants such as Apple Siri or Google Assistant - all via a simple tap of the intuitive metallic spin ring touch interface and natural voice commands.

Noisier environments present little challenge thanks to the two beamforming microphones built-in, which optimize voice pick-up for crystal clear phone calls and voice assistant interaction. The microphone system was also designed to provide Transparent Hearing feature, which gives the listener the option of blending ambient sounds into their listening experience for improved situational awareness, or to participate in conversations without removing the earphones. The Momentum True Wireless experience can also be personalized via the free Sennheiser Smart Control app, allowing fine-tuning of the sound according to personal preference via the earphones’ built-in audio EQ. The app for iOS and Android will be released once the product is available.

Otherwise the new Momentum True Wireless design is not exactly very different from current offerings in this space, with Sennheiser choosing to make the earbuds as compact and light as possible. This, of course, implies that the new TWS will offer a 4-hour battery life that can be recharged multiple times via their compact case with integrated power bank for more than 12 hours of all-day enjoyment. The fabric-wrapped charging case for these Bluetooth earphones is probably the most distinctive feature, following the aesthetics of other Momentum products.

Designed for a perfect fit and all-day comfort, the splash- and sweat-resistant earphones have been crafted for durability, finished in matte black with metallic details on the outer face as well as gold-plated charging pins and magnets on the inside.

“The Momentum range has always stood for a fusion of excellent sound, progressive technology and craftsmanship. We are pleased to now introduce the newest member of the family, which brings the essence of Momentum to a truly wireless form for the first time”, says Frank Foppe, Product Manager at Sennheiser. The Momentum True Wireless will be available from mid-November at a price of $299.95 USD.
