Neurochrome Launches Universal Purifi Input Buffer

March 19 2025, 00:35
Neurochrome, the Canadian audio electronics company created by Tom Christiansen, just announced an interesting new upcoming product for builders and all DIY enthusiasts. A new universal input buffer board, designed to extract the best possible performance from Purifi and Hypex Class-D amplifier modules. Improving on the Purifi EVAL1 and the Hypex NC500 evaluation board, the new universal single-channel (mono) design provides a differential output for the amplifier, even if the input to the buffer is single-ended.

The new Neurochrome Universal Purifi Input Buffer is designed for the Purifi 1ET400A, 1ET6525SA, 1ET7040SA, and 1ET9040BA Class-D amplifier modules, plus the Hypex NC500. According to Tom Christiansen, compared to its existing board designed for the Purifi 1ET400A/Hypex NC500 only, this new input buffer solution improves compatibility with the new Class-D amps from these companies and adds significant advantages. The Universal Purifi Input Buffer now provides a fully differential output for full power, even with a single-ended source, controlled common-mode voltage to prevent power supply bus pumping, and four independent ultra-low-noise voltage regulators for analog and digital power.

This is a valuable solution to isolate the input stage of the amplifier from the source device, ensuring signal integrity and preventing interference or loading effects, crucial for high-fidelity audio applications. The new  Neurochrome Universal Purifi Input Buffer features a differential (balanced, XLR) input, which can easily be configured for single-ended (unbalanced, RCA) operation.

Using a jumper, it is possible to select the gain for 11.6dB, 13.0dB, and 13.2dB for a total amplifier gain of 26.0dB when used with the Purifi Class D modules. Gain can be further customized by adding a resistor (1206 size SMD and leaded/PTH supported) or set to unity gain (0 dB). Connection with the popular Hypex SMPS1200 power supply is plug-and-play, and optionally, it's also possible to add the Hypex HPR/HNR regulators. Speaker output is provided on 6.3 × 0.81mm quick-connect spades and a terminal block accepting up to AWG 10 (5.2 mm2) in size. Advanced users will have further options, such as adding a resistor and a 7-pin connector, to operate the amplifier module in software mode.

Soon to be available in stock and priced at USD $249, the Universal Purifi Input Buffer circuit board is fully assembled, RoHS compliant, and is designed and manufactured in Canada. The Neurochrome website also offers many other products for those assembling audio amplifiers with the popular Purifi and Hypex amplifier boards, including robust chassis in silver or matte black as shown above.

Recently, Neurochrome appointed DigiKey to serve international markets, which allows users in the European Union and other regions to purchase the products in local currency, with local taxes already collected, and no import headaches and unexpected customs fees. Neurochrome products are expected to show up on the DigiKey Marketplace in early April 2025.
