Neurable, a neurotechnology company, announced a partnership with lifestyle brand Master & Dynamic (M&D) to launch a brain-computer interface (BCI) -enabled consumer audio product, the MW75 Neuro headphones. The smart headphones are intended to seamlessly integrate into everyday life, improving user cognitive performance and enabling hands-free control of devices. This special model of the existing MW75 wireless headphones will be able to play music according to our mood.
As a pioneer in the BCI wearable space, Neurable intends to turn everyday electronics into smart computing devices, featuring novel capabilities. That's the future that Neurable and Master & Dynamic are crafting, starting with the MW75 Neuro headphones.
For over a decade, the Boston-based company has been developing Neurable AI, a brain-computer interface technology that is intended to be applied to wearables and enables novel capabilities such as cognitive performance features. According to Neurable, the MW75 Neuro will know when the user will need to take a 'Brain Break'. By reading brain signs, Neurable AI will recommend when the user needs stop what he is doing, to recharge, to reduce burnout, and boost productivity. The brain interface will also help users banish distractions, knowing when the user is focused and when he's distracted.
By tying the data with the Neurable mobile app for iOS and Android, the user will be also able to receive a Focus Score, learning how to better optimize the day. The app will deliver reports that help uncover what affects our focus and what time of day our focus is best so we can plan our most productive day. It also allows tracking progress toward better focus habits and more productivity as our habits evolve and change.
But beyond the MW75 Neuro, Neurable intends to create a platform that will be able to expand to earbuds and other wearables. The goal is to have a "Powered by Neurable AI" badge on future products. Beginning in early 2024, the company intends to partner with other companies and brands to develop these products, leveraging its extensive ten years of experience in artificial intelligence (AI) and signal processing.
Creating the Everyday Brain-Computer Interface
Neurable was founded in 2015, dedicated to take BCIs to a new level of reliability and user satisfaction. Making neurotechnology usable in our daily lives and aiming to produce products that went beyond functionality, and could become intuitive extensions of the user's capabilities.
The company's initial breakthrough, at the University of Michigan’s Direct Brain Interface Lab, involved the development of artificial intelligence that could interpret brain signals recorded by electroencephalogram (EEG) gel caps, achieving unprecedented performance. This marked a paradigm shift, offering users a glimpse into the potential of how performant a brain-computer interface could be. The next step would be to evolve beyond the limitations of traditional EEG setups and transition from gel caps to a small number of dry electrodes. As it pursued this goal, Neurable's technology was validated by the US Air Force and rewarded with a contract to apply the technology to the US Military, while the company has raised over $20 Million in VC funding.
With the announcement of the MW75 Neuro headphones, it will be the first time that neurotechnology of this caliber will be available to the public outside of medical devices and intrusive head caps. The smart headphones will create a test bed to future consumer applications of BCI-enabled wearable technology, opening possibilities that are yet to be imagined.
"We could not think of a better brand to partner with than Master & Dynamic who excel in seamlessly blending the best of design, acoustics, and performance. Never before have we seen a BCI used in a commercial product. M&D is the team who had the vision to lead the way," says Ramses Alcaide, Neurable CEO and Co-Founder.
Neurable AI built the BCI module over Master & Dynamic current flagship ANC wireless headphones model, featuring seamlessly integrated neural sensors that measure brainwaves. The Master & Dynamic MW75 Neuro headphones are promoted as being able to help users identify focus periods, recognize subtle signs of stress, and discover optimal mental well-being conditions.
"The greatest advancement of audio technology over the last decade has been the migration from analog to Bluetooth wireless devices. Moving now into brain sensing thrusts the industry into a new wave of innovation. We're proud to lead the charge with Neurable," comments Jonathan Levine, Founder & CEO of Master & Dynamic.
Since it was founded in 2014, the New York City-based audio brand has released a variety of lifestyle audio products, with a consistent design and attention to build detail, applying only the finest materials and engineered to last. The MW75 Neuro headphones will be available for shipping in Q1 2024 in a limited number of each of the four initial colors.
