HEAD Acoustics Announces HEAD VISOR VMA V Acoustic Camera and Software

December 1 2023, 01:10
HEAD Acoustics is now offering a fully integrated, professional acoustic camera solution for noise source location. The new HEAD VISOR VMA V Acoustic Camera uses a lightweight and modular hardware that combines 60 microphones in a 30cm diameter circle, enough for close-up and automotive applications, which can be extended with ten spiral arms creating a 1 meter array with 120 microphones. The HEAD VISOR 6 Software delivers the algorithms and user interface for beamforming and all applications.

Acoustic cameras can determine the position of sound sources in sound fields using a microphone array and beamforming to process the captured signals. It is one of the hottest new product categories in acoustics, with fast growing applications and there are already multiple hardware options available, from small portable instruments, all the way to large size arrays for in-depth research.

HEAD Acoustics is now offering an integrated, professional-level solution that is based the new HEAD VISOR VMA V acoustic camera. The lightweight configuration offers extremely high levels of convenience and quality results, and can still be held manually during measurement without causing fatigue. The modular hardware allows all the operational settings to be configured on the device, which can also be used with a standard camera tripod.

Intuitive and efficient to operate, the HEAD VISOR VMA V camera features a 7" multi-touch display and four control buttons that enable instant results. All relevant functionalities of the HEAD VISOR Software are available on the handheld unit in real-time. The main body, 30cm in diameter, integrates 60 microphones for close-up measurement applications, for example, in a car interior and distances from 30cm. It is easily extendable with ten spiral arms, adding another 60 microphones and creating an array with a large diameter up to 1 meter. With this array, the HEAD VISOR VMA V achieves a higher resolution and makes sounds visible down to a frequency of typically 250Hz and allows users to visualize sounds at longer distances.

The HEAD VISOR 6 Software
The HEAD VISOR 6 Software delivers the user interface for beamforming and acoustic camera applications, and combines functions such as recording, playback, analysis, and reporting in one package. It also features unique artificial intelligence algorithms (like neural deconvolution) to increase dynamics and spatial resolution. Thanks to the sophisticated data processing, the system can keep the raw data, so users can make changes even after the measurement.

Applications for this acoustic camera solution can range from troubleshooting mechanical designs, and leak detection, through analyzing and optimizing sounds to visualizing acoustic weak points. It can be applied on test benches, in vehicles, in wind tunnels, or for environmental measurements.

In order to make the solution more accessible and optimized for these applications, HEAD acoustics created a licensing software model. Users can select between four licenses, ranging from the HEAD VISOR Snap license, which lets users take a snapshot of the object under investigation and export it instantly, to a full license that grants access to the full range of features offered by the HEAD VISOR system.

In combination, the HEAD VISOR VMA V and HEAD VISOR Software are able to identify precise sound location, sound pressure levels, and spectrum visualization in a wide range of scenarios and frequency range. More importantly, the acoustic camera delivers extremely high accuracy for the most challenging professional tasks, from car interiors to wind turbines. Since the results are visible directly on the camera display, the system operation becomes extremely portable and intuitive, allowing immediate analysis directly on the camera display.
