Edifier Introduces W240TN Bluetooth 5.3 ANC True Wireless Earbuds

September 7 2022, 00:35
Edifier has announced the release of their latest earbuds, featuring active noise cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth 5.3 and an eye-catching design. The new Edifier W240TN earbuds expand on the brand's record for affordable but premium quality audio and are aimed at the highly competitive under $100 market. And designing decent true wireless earbuds with ANC at this price, with a distinctive signature design, is not a small accomplishment.

Delivering the claimed "premium" audio quality, Edifier armed the W240TN earbuds with Dual Dynamic Drivers (6mm+10mm), in a concentric arrangement that the company says creates a wide soundfield aimed at immersing listeners in music. Compared to single drivers, the W240TN maintains delicate details even at a high volume threshold, while the hybrid ANC design also contributes to allowing users to benefit from the additional dynamics, and block out unwanted sounds.

With an "industrial-chic," gunmetal black or white finish, the W240TN earbuds are said to be inspired by the shape of a robust piston head (!). We're not certain if that's a good thing, but at least the earbuds are quite small and shouldn't protrude like  Frankenstein ear-screws. "Rugged yet trustworthy, the metallic design carries the legacy of the TWS1 Pro and the finished product speaks volumes for Edifier's pursuit of style," the company states.

And Edifier says this design was intentional, resulting in a "iconic profile that balances modern lines with a retro, almost 80s-like character; think Robocop meets Blade Runner 2049. In comparison to other earbuds on the market, which often take an altogether more minimal or maximalist approach, the W240TN gives off an effortlessly clean look, one that wouldn't look out of sorts on the streets of Manhattan, Dubai, Tokyo or London." OK. Good to see some clear product design thinking from a Chinese company.

Unlike the majority of its competitors, the W240TN earbuds feature the latest in Bluetooth 5.3 technology which not only provides impressively low latency (which can be reduced even further via a dedicated 'Game' mode) but also ensure more robust transmission. Regarding Bluetooth codecs, Edifier doesn't highlight anything and its website and just lists the standard SBC codec. For a product that features a dual driver and highlights audio quality, we certainly hope this is a just a website error and that the W240TN offer at least also AAC support.

Another aspect that needs clarification is that the W240TN earbuds are specified as providing 8.5 hours of playtime without ANC (very impressive), which should provide an approximate runtime up to 7 hours with ANC on - that seems to be a bit optimistic, particularly because it would depend on the remaining features in use. The compact USB-C charge case provides for a further 17 hours.

We understand that Edifier has experience with ANC design, but the vague references about the hybrid ANC implementation require more detail. The positive highlight is that users will enjoy crystal clear phone calls thanks to innovative AI DNN Adaptive Call Noise Reduction technology, which blocks out unwanted noises and focuses in on your voice. Also, the W240TN also allows 'Ambient Mode' for environmental sounds to seep through for safety.

The IP55 certified W240TN earbuds also include a range of ergonomic features supported by the Edifier Connect App, which gives smartphones users the option to customize all their call settings, EQ levels, ANC mode and more. For users who prefer a sturdy button, over a delicate touch sensitive one, the W240TN also comes with handy push controls.

For $79.99 USD, the W240TN provides a highly competitive option for those in need to upgrade from older, non-ANC, earbuds, and those who don't want to commit to something more expensive, given that very soon they will be upgrading to a newer Bluetooth LE Audio model anyway.
