AKM Partners with Silentium On Automotive Noise Control Solution

July 9 2021, 01:10
Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) and Silentium have signed a license agreement to develop engine order cancellation (EOC) solutions that reduce the impact of engine noise in the car cabin. By incorporating Silentium's proven EOC software, combined with AKM semiconductor and sensor technologies, vehicle manufacturers will be able to quickly implement systems that improve fuel efficiency by reducing reliance on heavy noise dampening materials.

AKM and Silentium agreed to work together on providing a ready-to-use Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system specifically adapted for engine noise, one of the most thought-after solutions in the automotive industry, as the transition from combustion to hybrid and fully-electric accelerates. AKM is a leading vendor of audio and voice technology to the automotive industry, contributing to the improvement of cabin comfort, while Israel-based Silentium is an industry pioneer with an already proven ANC software solution with highly responsive algorithms used in automotive applications. The partnership will accelerate availability for the automotive industry.

During its 15-year history of development efforts in this field, AKM expanded its noise canceling (EOC) and main driving path (ARNC - Active Road Noise Cancellation) solutions originally developed for Japanese automakers, to create a global customer service, ready to support the automotive industry in general.

The ready-to-use solution continuously monitors the engine noise  and RPM as a reference, while cabin microphones provide a reference to the DSP platform running the EOC algorithms, which control the built-in sound system in the car, creating an effective noise cancellation loop. Silentium's software is able to effectively reduce up to 90% of the targeted sampled frequencies or overall sound levels.

Now benefiting from a large-scale commercial collaboration, the integrated DSP hardware technology platforms from AKM will offer the highly-praised EOC and ANC software solutions from Silentium creating an effective solution to improve fuel efficiency, CO2 emissions, and comfort in the car. With this technology, vehicle manufacturers can save development costs and reduce vehicle weight – an important factor in enhancing electric vehicle range.

Recognition for Silentium
An innovator in high performance active noise cancellation and active acoustics, Silentium is scaling up the development and roll-out of its software solutions following new investment. The company has recently extended its Series D round, raising $30 million, and approximately $63 million in total. The latest extended round was led by Menora Mivtachim and Meitav Dash, both Israeli institutional investors. Existing strategic investors, including global electronics leader Molex, also participated in this latest round.

Yoel Naor, CEO of Silentium

“We welcome new partners that share the same passion for acoustics and see the value in enhancing privacy and wellbeing through personal sound spaces. With this new investment, we will scale up the development and roll out of our Active Acoustics software solutions for vehicle manufacturers and automotive suppliers – especially as NVH requirements evolve in the new era of electric and autonomous mobility,” states Yoel Naor, CEO of Silentium.

As people become more aware of in-vehicle sounds in the new era of electric and autonomous mobility, Silentium in-car sound environments reduce, cancel or enhance any sound inside all types of vehicle. In automotive, Silentium has been working on several global vehicle production programs for low cost, flexible Active Road Noise Cancellation (ARNC) software integration – offering full support from planning to production stages. Already available in new cars from Jaguar and Land Rover, the broad-band ARNC technology works across an unprecedented spectrum of frequencies (20Hz up to 1kHz).

With 50 employees and headquarters just outside Tel Aviv, Silentium has satellite offices around the world with sound engineers embedded within various global vehicle manufacturers. Boasting the largest R&D team in the field of Active Acoustics, Silentium expects to double its headcount within the next 12 months.
