Universal Audio announces UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt and UAD-2 OCTO Ultimate 3 DSP accelerators

September 23 2014, 08:31
At some point, the market believed external DSP accelerators would be soon surpassed by native (multiple-core) CPU resources on PC and Mac workstations and most of the manufacturers decided to discontinue that strategy. Universal Audio was the only company left in this domain and proved how audio recording hardware and software could continue to exponentially be improved by those add-on resources due to the evolution in faster communication interfaces, such as Intel and Apple’s Thunderbolt technology.

Now Universal Audio announced a new line of UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt DSP Accelerators as a sleek, powerful way for Thunderbolt-equipped Mac users to “supercharge” their systems and run larger mixes filled with rich, DSP-intensive plug-ins. The combination of DSP accelerators with newly optimized ultra low-latency plug-ins is proving to be future of studio outboard with all the flexibility and convenience of software integration.

The new desktop-friendly and fan-free units provide full access to UAD Powered Plug-Ins, including exclusive plug-in emulations from Studer, Ampex, Lexicon, Neve, Manley, SSL, Roland, EMT, Empirical Labs, MXR and more. Available in QUAD or OCTO models with a choice of four or eight SHARC processors, UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt DSP Accelerators can also be integrated alongside UAD-2 PCIe cards and Thunderbolt-enabled Apollo interfaces, including Apollo Twin, Apollo, and Apollo 16 — for truly scalable mixing power.

For an immediate out-of-the-box mixing experience, UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt DSP Accelerators are available in Core, Custom, and Ultimate software packages. The Core package includes the Analog Classics Plus plug-in bundle, while Custom adds a choice of any three individual UAD plug-ins at registration. The Satellite Thunderbolt OCTO Ultimate is UA’s flagship package, including more than 79 UA-developed plug-ins — up to and including UAD software v7.8.

Key features of the new UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt include support for UAD Powered Plug-Ins via Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 connection on Macs for improved performance at higher sample rates, and reduced plug-in latency versus FireWire, with 8 (OCTO) SHARC processors providing a massive DSP boost for running large professional mixes.

UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt includes Analog Classics Plus plug-in bundle, featuring the UA 610-B Preamp & EQ and Legacy editions of the LA-2A Classic Audio Leveler, 1176LN / 1176SE Classic Limiting Amplifier, Fairchild 670 Tube Limiter, Pultec Pro Equalizers, UA Precision Enhancer Hz, CS-1 Precision Channel, and RealVerb Pro plug-ins

The Thunderbolt-connected units can be combined with other UAD-2 devices, including additional UAD-2 PCIe card(s) with a qualified Thunderbolt PCIe chassis, UAD-2 Satellite (FireWire), and Thunderbolt-equipped Apollo interfaces. Each UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt unit features dual Thunderbolt 2 ports for daisy-chaining of Thunderbolt peripherals.

Prices for UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt systems varies from $999 for the     UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt QUAD Core, up to $5,999 for the UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt OCTO Ultimate. All are compatible with Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Live, and more DAW systems.

New UAD-2 OCTO Ultimate 3 packages
Universal Audio also announced Ultimate 3 packages for the UAD-2 OCTO PCIe DSP Accelerator Card and the new UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt OCTO DSP Accelerator, featuring 79 UA-developed UAD Powered Plug-Ins, including offerings from Studer, Ampex, Manley, API, Neve, and more. Ultimate 3 replaces the Ultimate 2 software bundle and includes all UA-developed plug-ins up to UAD Software v7.8 (Direct Developer plug-ins not included)

The new UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt OCTO Ultimate will cost 5,999 US MAP and includes new UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt OCTO DSP Accelerator desktop hardware plus the new Ultimate 3 software bundle. The new UAD-2 OCTO Ultimate 3 costs $5,999 US MAP and includes UAD-2 OCTO PCIe DSP Accelerator Card plus the new Ultimate 3 software bundle
