When Dynaudio expanded its Core reference monitor series the last time, it created one of the best sounding systems, with outstanding accuracy, for what remains one of the best values in the industry. The Core 47 three-way monitor, a nearfield that can easily fill duties as midfield in recording sessions, becomes a mastering-level system when combined with the Core Sub, which effectively acts as a perfect low-frequency extension.
The Dynaudio Core series combines the level of engineering and design detail that is typical of the Danish company, with ingenious DSP options, being able to deliver SPL levels that should meet any requirements for music producers and sound mixing stages. The new Core 5 compact monitor and Core Sub Compact extend that level of quality in a more affordable package for project studios and to fulfill duties in smaller rooms and immersive production.
The new Core 5 is a two-way active nearfield design that’s been created to work in cramped spaces in a stereo configuration, or to provide width and height support in an immersive setup. And, crucially, to give usable SPL for those jobs – as in an OB truck or a smaller mix-stage. The drivers are a 1"/28mm Dynaudio Cerotar Pro tweeter, also used in other Core speakers and even in most of the flagship home audio speakers from the brand (which cost much, much more). It uses a precision soft-dome diaphragm in conjunction with a Hexis resonance-defeating inner dome (see image). The 5" woofer is made from Dyanudio's proprietary MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) material – which provides precisely the right combination of lightness, stiffness and damping to produce the kind of accuracy that anyone recognizes after listening to these monitors. As Dynaudio warns "Make no mistake: these are revealing speakers. If there’s a problem in your mix, they’ll let you know about it."
With this familiar driver combination, the Core 5 is able to deliver 116dB maximum SPL at 1m, with a flat response down to 45Hz at -6dB and 51Hz at ±3dB. Inside the cabinets it packs 280W of class-D amplification each for the 5" woofer and 1" tweeter. The Core 5 also features variable input sensitivity, along with user-defined maximum output SPL settings (with the greatest bit-depth), customizable AES3 stream-channel routing and more.
The Core 5 uses the same DSP platform as the rest of the series, and each speaker has a set of filters that compensate for position and boundary locations – including meter-bridges, stands, brackets, free-space and soffit mounts. There's also a low-frequency 80Hz Linkwitz-Riley cutoff for use with a Core subwoofer. There are also sound-balance tilts (Bright, Natural and Dark) to fine-tune performance even more precisely for the room. The full-spectrum band-pass filters mean phase response is maintained between the drivers, which means timing accuracy, crucial in immersive setups. A powerhouse of a monitor in a small-studio-friendly enclosure. And clearly designed to deliver on subwoofer duties, the new Core Sub Compact delivers precision bass response without taking up space. It is able to reach down to 16Hz and it will output 115dB peak halfspace (in a small studio, you’ll definitely know it's there). It has a full set of DSP controls from the rest of the Core family, and it uses 280W of Class-D amplification for each of its twin drive-units in an opposed configuration.
Like the Core 5 monitors, the Core Sub Compact features the same DSP engine with all the customization options, analog and AES3 inputs and outputs, enabling everything from a 2.1-channel system right up to a full-on 17.1.11 immersive configuration. More importantly, the Core Sub Compact will work consistently with the rest of the Core studio family – regardless of the combination of speakers used.
Both the Core 5 and Core Sub Compact are available to buy now in selected stores in our EMEA region, and will be available in the rest of the world in Q2, 2024. The Core 5 unit retail price is EUR €1,590 (you will need at least two...) while the Core Sub Compact retails for a reasonable EUR €2,490. If any project studio owners find this expensive, just check the prices of Dynaudio home audio/high-end speakers, which are very familiar in design and choice of drivers...
If there's something that must be said about Dynaudio, is that they are a leading manufacturer of high-quality loudspeaker systems, with a complete range of dedicated systems for professional studios, as well as car audio and home hi-fi and consumer loudspeaker products, all designed in its state-of-the-art facility in Denmark.
