In the wake of the acquisition of the Hillcrest Laboratories (Hillcrest Labs) business from InterDigital in mid-2019, CEVA now introduced the Hillcrest Labs MotionEngine Hear, a sensor and processor agnostic embedded software solution for hearable devices. The new solution allows SoC vendors, OEMs and ODMs to take advantage of a configurable sensor fusion platform to add intuitive user interface, gesture control, activity tracking and spatial audio capabilities to hearable devices.

A new report from Juniper Research says that the number of hearables in-use will grow to more than 970 million by 2024. This is an increase of 270% over the 260 million estimated for 2020. This updated report identifies vendors that are leveraging hearable technology to add value to premium audio products, such as Bose and Sennheiser, while technology companies are producing earbuds that incorporate sensor platforms and AI capabilities. The market research company uses the term "hearables" loosely to describe all true wireless devices in the consumer electronics space, but also medical devices such as hearing aids and even cochlear implants. In this overview, it finds that the market was worth $24.5bn in 2019 and will continue to grow at a forecasted 14% YoY from 2020-2025, driven primarily by the true wireless consumer category.
