Bosch Sensortec announced the acquisition of Arioso Systems, the Fraunhofer IPMS spin-off company that developed its own innovative sound transducer principle for miniaturized MEMS microspeakers based on the patented Nanoscopic Electrostatic Drive (NED) principle. With this acquisition Bosch expands from MEMS microphones to the attractive market segment of silicon microspeakers, soon to be at the core of new generation true wireless hearables.

USound announced its entrance into the health technology industry with the introduction of MEMS speakers that are fully compliant for MRI-compatible headphones and accessories. The Austrian developer of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) loudspeakers and drivers, announced a collaboration with NordicNeuroLab to develop headphones fitted with USound MEMS drivers, which are suitable to protect patients from loud noises and relax them while inside Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines, due to its non-magnetic properties.

USound Announces Fully Integrated MEMS Audio Modules for True Wireless Earbuds

USound, the developer and manufacturer of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) speakers for personal devices and wearables, announced an expanded partnership with AT&S Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik, a manufacturer of high-end printed circuit boards and integrated circuit substrates, to manufacture USound’s new fully integrated audio module for True Wireless Earbuds (TWS). The new audio modules can be 75% smaller and 85% lighter, with improved sound quality, compared to current TWS solutions.

Fresh From the Bench: USound Megaclite 4.0 UH-R2040 MEMS Earphones

The Megaclite 4.0 UH-R2040 is a reference design based on USound's Achelous UT-P2018 MEMS drivers, comparable in length and width to smaller balanced armatures, but thinner. They’re SMT reflow-compatible, so easy to incorporate into automatic assembly processes. Brent Butterworth listened, measured, and compared the performance of this new design against conventional in-ear products using established driver technologies. xMEMS Labs introduced Montara Pro, a MEMS microspeaker with an integrated solution that opens or closes the vent by sensor fusion input from the system DSP. This approach enables smart TWS earbuds and hearing aids that create best-of-both-worlds user experiences, combining the benefits of closed-fit (occluded) and open-fit earbuds. xMEMS is providing first demonstrations of Montara Pro this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas at Venetian Suite 29-325.

USound Raises $30M to Ramp Manufacturing of Second-Generation MEMS Technology

USound, the Austria-based developer and manufacturer of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) speakers for personal devices and wearable technology, announced that it has raised $30 million USD (€25 million EUR) to move into mass production of its second generation MEMS devices, with commitments from several global companies. The investment will ensure that USound will be in a position to build a stable supply chain to meet growing demand for its second-generation MEMS technology.

xMEMS Announces Tomales MEMS Tweeter for Smart Glasses and Extended Reality Headset Applications

xMEMS Labs introduced Tomales, a new monolithic, 1mm-thin profile MEMS tweeter µspeaker, available with top and side-firing package options that simplify speaker placement and positioning to direct audio toward the ear in smart glasses and augmented/extended reality headset applications. This new MEMS driver, which uses the company second generation M2 speaker cell architecture, has an IP58 rating for dust/water that simplifies system integration in these designs.
