Patent Review: An Advanced Loudspeaker System

This article examines a notable patent from VUE Audiotechnik, describing a loudspeaker system with one driver providing a direct radiating output from the front, and a second driver on a ported side chamber, sharing a ported common chamber, where at least one port of the ported common chamber exits the front of the loudspeaker system. As Croft notes, this is an innovative advanced system - that was patent-pending at the time - and provides a unique combination of technology, offering real-world advantages. The patent was granted in 2021.

Meyer Sound announced a new 2100-LFC low-frequency control array element, a powerful new loudspeaker design that extends the advanced technology of its latest Phanter large-format linear line array loudspeaker down to the lowest limits of audibility. By pairing a potent Class-D amplifier with a single, all-new 21-inch driver with four voice coils, the 2100-LFC produces an extended frequency response from 30Hz to 125Hz.

The patent reviewed here was granted to inventors Robert G. Johnston (Amprior Ontario, CA), and Sanford M.Gross (Owings Mills, MD), respectively the head of engineering of GoldenEar Technology, and one of its co-founders. The patent describes a subwoofer with two drivers on each side plus one passive radiator facing up and one passive radiator facing down. The passive radiator facing down effectively couples acoustic energy at very low frequencies into the floor.
