Tidal Implements Album Loudness Normalization and Activates It by Default for Mobile Players

Always looking to differentiate its music streaming service with higher quality experiences, Tidal has now adopted the loudness recommendations of Eelco Grimm, HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and Grimm Audio. In Tidal’s recent update of their iOS and Android apps, loudness normalization is now turned ON by default. With this move, Tidal follows the trend towards automatic loudness normalization that was initiated by Spotify and Youtube.

A collective of pro audio veterans, lead by engineer and educator Friedemann Tischmeyer, have started a new enterprise. Based in California, MAAT Inc is building premium quality software and hardware for production professionals at all budget and skill levels. As an introduction, MAAT released a free download of 2BusControl, a cross-platform metering and monitor controller plug-in, and now announced the release of the new DR Meter, a remodeled plug-in of the legendary TT Dynamic Range Meter.

During the 137th International Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention in Los Angeles, CA, a session on the Broadcast & Streaming Media Track discussed “Loudness for Streaming and Radio.” Thomas Lund (TC Electronic), an expert and longtime promoter of the loudness standards currently implemented in TV broadcast, chaired the session, which included an interesting angle from Bob Orban (Orban) and Frank Foti (Telos/Omnia).
