Amazon unveiled its new voice assistant Alexa+, now fully enabled by artificial intelligence. This is the predictable next step to bring back voice interfaces and personal assistants, directly interfacing and powered by generative AI engines, which helps explain why Amazon called Alexa+ its new personal AI assistant. The promotion shows a more conversational and more capable natural language voice interface. Time for the audio industry to start looking again at voice front-ends and smart speakers?

James Croft (Croft Acoustical) reviews a very curious patent from Amazon Technologies, Inc. (Reno, NV), filed in 2013, and awarded in April 2017. Basically, the patent discusses a new technique to tune a port of a loudspeaker, in this case multiple ports that will be open or selectively closed, in function of an analysis of the frequencies of the signal being played. Remember smart speakers? Apparently Amazon doesn't want to. At that time of the year when traditionally Amazon would introduce the latest models of its Echo smart speakers, this year the company only announced a new smart display, the next generation Echo Show 8 with an upgraded processor, spatial audio, and a built-in smart home hub. And for those who don't even want the speaker, Amazon introduced a new Echo Hub, a smart home control panel. Amazon did expand on the audio glasses category, with two ugly frames that are said to have a long-lasting battery.

Global Smart Speaker Sales Reach 30 Million Units in Q2 2020

Defying the impact of the pandemic, global sales of smart speakers in Q2 2020 rose to 30.0 million units, an increase of 6% compared to Q1, according to preliminary results from Strategy Analytics. On a year-on-year basis, worldwide shipments of smart speakers and smart displays fell by 0.4% in Q2 2020, still a very robust indicator. Amazon retained first place with a share of 21.6%, followed by Google (17.1%) and Baidu (16.7%).
