Spotify Finally Launches 24-bit Lossless Streaming

Spotify, the streaming music service that continues to dump AI-generated fake music into its own paying subscribers’ playlists, while increasing its prices, just announced a long-overdue higher-quality lossless streaming option. Subscribers on Spotify Premium will now have the option to choose 24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC instead of the standard Ogg Vorbis compressed formats it previously offered. The Swedish company doesn’t seem very convinced that this will be recognized by its users who don’t even mind listening to automatic AI-generated fake music.

It's no big secret that IKEA and Spotify are from Sweden, and a collaboration between the two Swedish companies on a Bluetooth speaker would not come as a surprise. But effectively, IKEA has done speakers before and the company has mainly worked with Sonos on two very successful products for whole home audio. Spotify partnered with DSP Concepts to build and deploy the audio front-end (AFE) software for its limited release of Car Thing, a dedicated smart player for the car. Spotify did the development for Car Thing using TalkTo, DSP Concepts’ proprietary AFE that acts as a ‘microphone cleaner’ by combining advanced signal processing techniques to create clean audio signals so Car Thing can detect voice commands regardless of road noise and other in-cabin sound.

In a effort to expand its reach in the lucrative automotive sector, Swedish streaming audio company Spotify has launched its very first hardware product. With free and widely available radio stations still dominating the space, car audio remains the last frontier to be conquered by streaming services. Spotify seems determined to cover that market, even if it requires launching a proof-of-concept product. Spotify Car Thing is basically a dedicated Spotify player with voice controls for Premium subscribers, cutting the ties to the smartphone.
