The Scan-Speak D3004/606200 is a 1" compact tweeter from its Illuminator Line, and features the new generation of Metamodal TPCD diaphragms. Scan-Speak has been participating in Composite Sound's metamodal development program, and the new D3404 tweeter is the first to be released. It features a low resonance, injection-molded rear chamber, SD-2 neodymium motor, large-roll coated cloth surround, and black anodized machined aluminum faceplate. This Test Bench characterizes the new Scan-Speak 15W/8534T00 woofer, which fills the gap in the Classic family for a compact high-performance 5.5” (15cm) midbass driver. It is based on the design principles of the popular 18W/8545 continuing the tradition with a slim frame aluminum chassis, Symmetrical Drive (SD) motor system, low loss linear rubber suspension, and updated with a brand-new cone material called Phenomax.

The IB4 Bass Reflex Alignment

Before computers were broadly available for loudspeaker bass reflex box simulations, engineers relied on "Alignments" for their designs. Such box alignments are typically named after equivalent filter functions that the high-pass response of the box was aligned after — for example, Butterworth (B4) and Bessel (BL4) — to name a few. This article, the third in this series, explores the rarely talked about Inter-Order Butterworth (IB4) alignment, mentioned originally by Richard Small and Neville Thiele.

Coming from the Czech Republic, Xavian is the first hifi company to do what many speaker designers have dreamed of doing. They designed a speaker completely relying on the advanced Scan-Speak Ellipticor drivers. Exploring the benefits of an elliptical voice coil to defeat cone and dome standing wave modes, the new Medea speakers from Xavian feature an 8.5" Scan-Speak Ellipticor woofer and 4.7" Scan-Speak Ellipticor silk dome tweeter in a simple two-way bass reflex wooden cabinet with a very simple, passive crossover design.

Vance Dickason measures the Scan-Speak D2008/2010, the revised version of the classic dome tweeter from the Danish brand. The D2010 and the D2008 are two revised classic Scan-Speak 19mm soft dome tweeters, originally launched more than 35 years ago. Scan-Speak basically discontinued production of the original 19mm ferrite magnet soft dome models and replaced them with these new 19mm textile dome neodymium motor versions.

For this Test Bench, Vance Dickason measures the Scan-Speak 18ME/9642T00 Ellipticor 6.5" Midrange, the first driver to be offered only to Scan-Speak's OEM customers, not available on the DIY retail market. Benefiting from the oval (elliptical) voice coil shape that characterizes the Ellipticor range, this midrange also features the AirCirc motor structure, and Symmetrical Drive SD-2 motor format.

Scan-Speak Launches Updated Illuminator R3004/602200 1” Ring Radiator Tweeter

In continuation of the recently updated D3004/602200 Illuminator dome tweeter, Scan-Speak is now releasing the similar updated ring radiator sibling R3004/602200 that replaces the R3004/602000 and R3004/602010 models. The compact size is one of the key elements of these Illuminator tweeters, which provide a high degree of flexibility within design options, and are fully comparable to the renowned full size Illuminator and Revelator tweeters.
