Toshiba Expands U-MOS IX-H MOSFET Family with 40V N-Channel Devices

Toshiba America Electronic Components, announced the addition of two new N-channel devices to its U-MOS IX-H family of high-efficiency, high-speed switching MOSFETs. Delivering best-in-class efficiency across a range of load conditions, Toshiba’s new MOSFETs feature U-MOS IX-H technology, which ensures stable operation also over a wide range of temperatures.

Published in two separate parts in audioXpress October and November 2007, this hybrid amp design is a detailed and interesting project, frequently referenced by other DIY audio enthusiasts. We thought it was time to make it available online in its entirety, in the best possible quality. The article discusses the unity-gain, single-ended MOSFET output stage, the valve voltage amplification stage and wraps up with the power supplies, printed circuit boards, and construction.

Simon Brown rethinks what he needs as the amp that will be the centerpiece in his own audio system and perfects a previous design with a true hybrid design. As he writes, "This amp is a “hybrid” in many ways. There is the obvious way in which it uses both valves and MOSFETs. Ron Tipton was deeply impressed with this amplifier project which used only five transistors per channel, two of them being current sources. Nexperia, the former Standard Products division of NXP, announced the availability of its automotive power MOSFETs in the new, LFPAK33, thermally-enhanced, loss-free package which has a footprint more than 80 percent smaller than industry standard devices. LFPAK33 MOSFETs enable the power infrastructure that allows next-generation automotive subsystems such as infotainment technology to operate reliably and efficiently.

This project is based on Erno Borbely’s EB-602/210 single-ended pure Class A amplifier and is capable of driving headphones between 32 and 600Ω. It consists of two identical but separate amps laid out on the same PCB. The schematic is the same as Erno’s extremely popular hybrid tube/MOSFET line amp, published in Glass Audio 1/98. TERESA amplifier is a simple and cascadable Class-AB design. The name is an acronym for manufacturers TExas Instruments and REneSAs, who provided the parts for the core of this amplifier. Stuart Yaniger wrote a great article for audioXpress in February 2009, The ImPasse Preamplifier, describing a tube preamp to drive a pair of Nelson Pass’ First Watt F4’s (or other low-to-unity-gain power amplifiers) in balanced mono. Yaniger’s preamp is truly an elegant design with very, very low distortion, using a 6SN7 to drive a 6922 in balanced mode. There are LED’s, NE2H neon lamps and depletion MOSFETs in the design.
