Voyage Audio Ships Spatial Mic Dante 360 Ambisonic Microphone

October 21 2022, 02:10
Voyage Audio, the creators of the Spatial Mic USB have announced Spatial Mic Dante, a hybrid analog-digital 2nd order ambisonic microphone featuring improved control, versatility and quality. According to the San Diego-based company, Spatial Mic Dante captures the entire soundfield with 8 capsules, while providing output flexibility for critical recording and live broadcast combining built-in Dante audio networking and remote configuration with Power Over Ethernet (PoE).

"Spatial Mic Dante completely redefines what a microphone can do," says Voyage Audio founder Colin Ritchie. "A multichannel 360 microphone with built-in Dante audio networking, coupled with MicNet Control and Spatial Mic Converter software opens up many exciting applications in broadcast, live and studio recording."

With Audinate’s industry standard Dante audio networking built-in, there is no need for complex multi-microphone and preamp setups. Users can simply use an Ethernet cable and focus on recording immersive audio for VR, surround sound, Dolby Atmos, spatial and stereo music, concerts, and live broadcasts. As all networked systems allow, users also have the flexibility to remote control the microphone to output complex polar patterns and aim around the soundfield of the Spatial Mic Dante. This brings the freedom to experiment with sound in completely new ways since all capsules are individually calibrated for a balanced array.

Included with Spatial Mic Dante is the new MicNet control app that lets users remotely adjust connected microphones on the network. Using filters created in an anechoic chamber especially for Spatial Mic Dante, the Spatial Mic Converter plugin (VST & AAX) now works for post processing the entire Spatial Mic family — users just need to select which mic the recording was created with from the new dropdown menu. The plugin and newly released example sessions can be downloaded for free on the Voyage Audio website.

The Spatial Mic Dante features a Dante audio network interface up to 32-bit/192kHz, and support also an AES67 mode up to 32-bit/48kHz. Each of the 8 capsules is specified for an SNR of 78dB-A and 136 dB Max SPL. The output is configurable for unprocessed, surround sound, ambiX and virtual mics with pattern controls (continuously variable from omni to cardioid to figure-8). According to Voyage Audio, the new Spatial Mic Dante also features Cirrus Logic ADC converters and a THAT Corp analog front end.

The microphone works together with the MicNet Control software available for both Windows and Mac. As the name implies, the software remote controls the analog stage and internal DSP processing, allowing users to change between unprocessed, 1st order ambisonics, surround feeds (5.1, 5.1.2, 7.1) and virtual mic mono or stereo pairs with pattern control and make-up gain. The software also allows controlling multiple mics on the network from a single instance of MicNet Control. Other useful features in the software are a high pass filter, gain trim and comprehensive level metering

The Spatial Mic Converter free download plugin (VST3 and AAX) encodes unprocessed audio from a Spatial Mic to first or second order ambisonics in AmbiX or Fuma formats, Surround Sound (up to 7.1.4 Atmos) or virtual mic patterns including mid-side for mono or stereo output. It also adds multiple output filters, created using measurements from an anechoic chamber, allowing users to change aim and orientation. The plugin also offers high pass filter, gain trim and comprehensive level metering and individual controls depending on which output stage is selected.

Voyage Audio was founded in San Diego, CA to design, build and market innovative microphones and software for audio recording and production. Spatial Mic USB, their first product was named "Best of NAMM 2020" by multiple media outlets. The Spatial Mic Dante microphone with all the software included retails for USD $2,899 MAP.
