STMicroelectronics Announces New-Generation Class-D Audio Amplifier IC Developed in Cooperation with Alps Alpine

March 5 2020, 00:20
STMicroelectronics announced the new FDA901 class-D audio amplifier IC, a new design that incorporates the world-class audio expertise of Japanese manufacturer of car audio equipment, Alps Alpine. The new ST chip aims to contribute to the creation of multi-function, high-fidelity car audio systems that fuse the high efficiency of class-D amplifiers with the high-quality sound of ST’s class-AB amplifiers.

As STMicroelectronics explains, the new FDA901 IS combines low residual noise with low distortion ratio, a flat frequency response achieved through feedback technology, and low EMI levels. The new solution is equipped with a range of self-diagnostics and other advanced functions to measure real-time speaker current and impedance, factors prized in the next-generation car audio market for diagnostics and to compensate for loudspeaker imperfections.

Specifically, the FDA901 IC is a new BCD technology Quad Bridge class D amplifier, using an high performance D/A converter together with powerful MOSFET outputs in class D, to get an outstanding efficiency compared to the standard class AB. The integrated D/A converter with support for sampling frequencies from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz, ensures a 115 dB S/N ratio with 110 dB of dynamic range. The feedback loop includes the output L-C low-pass filter, allowing superior frequency response linearity and lower distortion independently from the inductor and capacitor quality.

The FDA901 is fully configurable through I2C bus and it includes not only the most complete load diagnostic matrix but also a unique real time load current acquisition on I2C and I2S data lines, enabling sophisticated speaker monitoring functions. Thanks to the solutions implemented to contain EMI emissions, the device is intended to be used in the standard single DIN car-radio box together with the tuner. Finally, the FDA901 is able to work with power supply as low as 6V, thus supporting the most recent low voltage ('start-stop') car-makers specification.

"For many years, Alpine Electronics has collaborated closely with ST and shared a wealth of sound-related knowledge," says Yukihiro Kobori, Sound Meister, Sound Design Division of Alps Alpine. "We are very pleased that ST's audio amplifier IC and our company's car audio technology and business have been able to grow together. We have worked with ST to design a class-D audio amplifier IC able to raise the level of audio quality across the entire car audio industry, while contributing to Alps Alpine's goal of developing the highest level of car audio."

Starting from the adoption in 39 models of Alpine's new BigX series of after-market car-navigation systems to be released in the first half of 2020, the FDA901 IS will also be adopted be several major car makers.

"In car audio, the amplifier IC is a key component that greatly affects sound quality," states Luca Celant, General Manager, Automotive Infotainment Division, Automotive & Discrete Group, STMicroelectronics. "Drawing on the close cooperative relationship that we have built with Alps Alpine's engineering team through class-AB audio amplifiers, this new class-D audio amplifier represents another milestone for our class-D audio amplifiers and sets a new bar for audio performance."

The FDA901 is in volume production and available in a single LQFP package. Budgetary pricing is $9.10 for orders of 1,000 pieces and the product will be available through distributors by April 2020.
