Spatial, Immersive, Inside and Out Automotive Sound in audioXpress June 2023

As promised for our Automotive Audio special issue, readers will gain a comprehensive perspective of the key technologies in play in the transition to Electric Vehicles. In this Market Update, Roger Shively and J. Martins address how the rapid shift to plug-in hybrid and full-battery electric vehicles is having a significant and long-lasting impact on the way audio systems are integrated in the car. From active road noise cancellation (ARNC) technology to immersive audio, this feature addresses the latest DSP platforms for automotive sound and new approaches on the creation of transducers optimized for battery-operated vehicles.

In a fascinating exchange with two members of the DSP Concepts automotive team with vast experience in the field - John Whitecar, VP of Product Management, and Steve Ernst, Head of Business Development - Adam Levenson summed up interesting perspectives on Automotive Sound Design in the Era of Electric Vehicles. From combustion engine vehicles to fully electric vehicles, and from sound systems in the car to sound design and synthesis of the car itself, this conversation offers valuable insights on how things are changing in the automotive industry.

A third article focused on automotive sound is another valuable contribution by industry-expert Philipp Paul Klose, this time addressing acoustic measurements and the practical application of DSP in car cabins, one of the hardest acoustic environments for quality sound reproduction. A continuation of the article published in audioXpress March 2023, focused on microphone techniques, this article expands on how to make use of the collected measurement data, with a structured and strategic approach of the signal flow. The key takeaways from this article are applicable to other audio systems and product development.

Another highlight in this June 2023 issue is a first-person account of the fascinating journey of British company Audioscenic, an innovative 3D audio beamforming technology company spun off from the University of Southampton. Marcos Simón (Audioscenic CTO and Co-Founder) shares how through a remarkable example of perseverance, Audioscenic realized its forward-thinking approach, from crosstalk cancellation systems to full 3D audio. Audioscenic recently achieved its first commercial implementation with the Razer Leviathan V2 Pro gaming soundbar, the first on the market to implement Audioscenic's unique 3D audio beamforming technology. A soundbar that captured 12 "Best of CES" awards, including from audioXpress.
 

And in a fascinating article on common sound theory misconceptions that exist in the audio and hi-fi communities, René Christensen debunks three of them. Starting with group delay and phase delay, what actually happens when a loudspeaker driver moves outward and inward, and the effects of polarity and phase flip.

For this month's Sound Control article, Richard Honeycutt explores the book Rock and Pop Venues: Acoustic and Architectural Design by Niels Werner Adelman-Larsen, recently updated with a Second Edition. This book was referenced in previous Sound Control articles and details an interesting study of the acoustics for rock and pop concerts and the differences in the acoustical requirements for these types of music.

Transitioning to our DIY section, George Ntanavaras brings us a welcome upgrade of the original ACH-01 accelerometer system for measuring and studying the vibration behavior of a loudspeaker, cabinet, stands, and more. The original ACH-01 accelerometer project was published in June 2011, and the updated AP-2 amplifier now receives new useful features, some of which were suggested by users of the first design.
 

The next article wraps up a project, detailing a unique rebuild from a precious tube amplifier designer. In Part 1 of this article, Thomas Perazella presented the famous David Berning ZOTL amplifier and discussed its unique circuitry - a different angle on audio amplifier design with 300B tubes. Now, he describes his adventure to dismantle and rebuild the amp for its new owner on a new chassis.

And finally, Chuck Hansen continues his unique series of articles on Power Transformer Parameters, Selection, and Testing. The initial group of articles detailed the history of transformer cores, various construction methods, their materials, a few testing methods, their losses, commercial power quality, and the design of current transformers. For Part 8 of this series, he focuses on additional transformer core types, core winding, and their advantages and disadvantages.
