Sound Particles Releases Space Controller OSC Hands-On Panning App

January 25 2022, 01:10
Sound Particles, the innovative 3D audio production software company, released a new app based on its original Space Controller plugin introduced in 2021, now created specifically for direct control over OSC with Nuendo and SPAT Revolution. Space Controller OSC connects a mobile phone to Nuendo or SPAT Revolution and links the physical movements of the device to the software's panning tools by simply pointing the phone to where the user wants sounds to come from. No plugin required.

Open Sound Control (OSC) is a protocol originally created to enable new levels of expression using sound synthesizers and physical controllers. It has gradually evolved as a realtime control interface between all sorts of applications and hardware, and is now a powerful tool used for spatial audio production, including for realtime, live performances. There's even an initiative to standardize OSC as a streaming protocol for interoperability among immersive audio systems, promoted by multiple companies, among which is FLUX::, the creators of SPAT Revolution.

Benefiting from a unique perspective in the field, Sound Particles is creating useful software tools for content production, interfacing directly with all the leading platforms. After all, the software tools created by the company are currently used by top game production companies and all major Hollywood studios in productions such as Dune, Game of Thrones, Frozen II or Star Wars 9.

It was this deep expertise that enabled the creation of Space Controller, an affordable plugin and mobile app that together created a universal controller for any production format, allowing users to pan sounds by simply pointing their phone in the direction they want the sound to be. In this original version of Space Controller, the app and the plugin act together to translate the control from the mobile device into messages that are accepted by the host software.

The latest news is that with the new Space Controller OSC mobile app it is now possible to connect directly to the Steinberg and FLUX:: software, no plugin necessary. That means the app now allows full control over Dolby Atmos objects directly, with real-time precision. The app also introduces distance control, something its predecessor did not have, and allows using the same mobile device to control multiple objects or use multiple mobile devices to control different objects.

More specifically, the app connects a mobile phone to Nuendo (by connecting directly to Nuendo’s VST MultiPanner) or SPAT Revolution (real-time spatialization in live shows and performances) and links the physical movements of the device to the software, enabling full OSC control over their panning tools by simply pointing the phone. The patent-pending technology offers a highly efficient and intuitive way to control sounds.

“For us, to have this wonderful way to pan sounds in 3D but to not be able to use it with Dolby Atmos objects was almost painful. Steinberg had the faster solution, since they already allow objects to be controlled by OSC,” explains Nuno Fonseca, founder and CEO of Sound Particles. “In the meantime, we will continue to work with other DAW companies, trying to find ways to control objects directly using Space Controller.”

Space Controller OSC is available now for iOS and Android mobile devices through the App Store and Google Play Store for a discounted price of $149 (plus applicable taxes) until February 28. Full system requirements and additional product information can be found here.
