Renault Unveils New Mégane E-TECH Electric with Sound by Harman Kardon

September 6 2021, 01:10
Harman International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, announced that the new Renault Mégane E-TECH Electric, scheduled to be launched in 2022, will feature an advanced Harman Kardon sound system. This is a first step in the partnership between Harman International's brand Harman Kardon, and the world-renowned French automobile manufacturer. The new model uses 3rd Generation Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies and is completely Google and Android-based.

Harman Kardon's acoustics engineers worked hand-in-hand with the Renault design team to create a cutting-edge sound system that fits perfectly in the upcoming Mégane E-TECH Electric interior. The Harman Kardon premium sound system will equip by default the new model top-line trim and will be offered as a premium option on the mid-level trim of the all-new Renault Mégane E-TECH Electric. The sound system was optimized for both music and the spoken word, using a spatial arrangement and custom sound tuning to ensure that the listener can precisely localize all sound sources, and focus on the sound stage. This gives the sensation of a bigger space, Harman describes.

Vehicle cabins are considered among the most acoustically challenging environments, due to multiple speakers, various seating locations, diverse materials, and reflective surface. Additional speakers or artificial effects are not enough to deliver an authentic and emotional musical experience.

An algorithm that equalizes phase responses in the car creates a stable, well-defined, and coherent sound image and distinct stereo sound for all car occupants. Virtual Center technology processes each speaker’s audio signal to guarantee an unbiased stereo stage with a center image right in front of each listener. The automatic level adjustment compensates for differences in sound intensity between different program sources so the occupants can enjoy the ride completely undisturbed.

Complete musical immersion is made possible by nine speakers, including a subwoofer powered by a digital multichannel amplifier with up to 410 watts of power. Harman's unique Externally Coupled Subwoofer technology reduces the subwoofer’s weight and volume while achieving exceptionally high performance in the low-frequency range. The Harman Kardon system design uses grills made of stainless steel in the two tweeters in the dashboard, with a matt black finish that makes the embedded logo stand out.

Harman's patented QLS (QuantumLogic Surround) algorithm separates input sources and splits them into individual streams and speakers to create immersive surround sound with a unique stage, envelopment, and surrounding content for each passenger. Furthermore, with a touch of a finger, vehicle occupants can choose between five sound ambiances to match their individual preferences when listening to music.

Studio delivers a precise, clear and detailed reproduction; Concert generates a wide stereo stage; Immersion creates a feeling of being surrounded by instruments; Lounge offers an intimate setting; and Club generates an intense low frequency bass extension with a loud, wide and high-contrast sound. And Harman's Vehicle Speed Compensation provides an advanced algorithm to maintain the music reproduction level and tonal balance at any vehicle speed.

Apart from the sound systems, new Renault Mégane E-TECH Electric unveils a partnership with Qualcomm Technologies and Google. Renault confirmed that it will adopt the 3rd Generation Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm to power the vehicle’s infotainment system. The design features a portrait-sized touchscreen display for audio, visual and navigational functions and will come equipped with built-in Google apps and services (such as Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play).

The Mégane E-TECH Electric’s digital cockpit is obviously "powered" by Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS), with Google built-in. The Mégane E-TECH Electric will feature hands-free Google Assistant, positionally precise navigational maps with Google Maps, as well as access to the ecosystem of automotive applications and services on Google Play that are connected and upgradeable. Users who don't feel comfortable sharing their life with Google, and prefer not to use Android will have the choice to buy cars from other brands.
