OIKLA, a London-based audio technology startup has announced Perception, a new audio hearing protection algorithm designed specifically for Remora PRO, the powerful wireless audio hardware platform that was unveiled at High End Munich 2024. Leveraging the advanced capabilities of Sonical's embedded operating system, CosmOS, Perception preserves auditory health while delivering unparalleled audio experiences through headphones and all other ear-worn products.
Remora PRO is a unique product and design that will enable a number of innovative use cases in wireless headphones and earbuds. Targeting first shipments by the end of September 2024 it will create a unique wireless audio platform to extend personal audio options in a way that wasn't available until now. Remora PRO is a unique ear computer platform with high performance AI and DSP capabilities and is able to support the most advanced audio processing apps, which typically would have to be offloaded to a connected device such as a smartphone or tablet. Not surprisingly, many software houses that until now had their platform options restricted to iOS or Android devices, are now eyeing the potential of Remora PRO to enable untapped possibilities.
With the integration of OIKLA's Perception, Remora PRO will improve sound quality and user well-being in any listening environment. As OIKLA explains, its Perception technology seamlessly blends two powerful features to provide an audio experience that feels louder and more immersive while maintaining safe listening levels. This approach ensures users can enjoy their favorite sounds without risking their hearing health.
The technology proactively monitors listening levels and alerts users or limits audio when safe thresholds are exceeded, ensuring continuous protection against hearing damage. This feature ensures that even as audio levels increase, user safety remains a top priority. "In the light of recent data from the World Health Organization that brings to our attention the huge number of hearing issues being uncovered, in particular with younger listeners, we believe everyone should be protecting their hearing," the company states.
Perception uses advanced loudness compensation to dynamically adjust the content in two ways. Harnessing the latest ISO standards, the algorithm fine-tunes loudness based on the audio content and the frequency spectrum of the headphone acoustics. This ensures that users perceive sound as louder and more dynamic without the need for higher volumes, thereby reducing the risk of hearing damage. Next, advanced algorithms amplify spatial audio cues, offering a deeply immersive listening experience. This enhances the perception of sound depth and direction, making the audio experience more engaging and realistic.
"Our partnership with Sonical has allowed us to combine cutting-edge technology with a steadfast commitment to user well-being," says Luigi Cosi, CEO at OIKLA. "With the launch of Perception for Remora PRO, we are proud to offer users an unparalleled fusion of exceptional audio performance and advanced hearing protection capabilities."
OIKLA has developed these audio technologies originally for music production plugins, enhancing specific sound elements in the mix by focusing on psychoacoustics and equal loudness curves. This powerful approach alters the perceived loudness and frequency balance of any sound in a way that is natural, ear-friendly, and inspiring. With the possibility of running its software on a real-time embedded platform such as Remora PRO, OIKLA was inspired to focus on hearing loss prevention and emulating high sound levels at safe volumes, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of audio technology.
"Sound level monitoring and hearing protection are among the most requested features that end users ask us to support. Oikla's solution comes from the professional plugin community and is a fantastic addition to the CosmOS enabled ecosystem," adds Gary Spittle, CEO of Sonical.
Remora PRO will be equipped with OIKLA's Perception audio hearing protection algorithm when it starts shipping.
