Norsonic unveiled a follow-up to its longstanding Nor276 dodecahedron loudspeaker, with a new small, lightweight, yet powerful and rugged design, engineered for the most demanding field and laboratory applications. The new Nor283 supersedes all previous Norsonic models, being able to deliver impressive sound power level at low frequencies for its size. The output level when powered by the battery-operated power amplifier Nor282 is an impressive 123dB LW.
The new Nor283 dodecahedron loudspeaker is designed to be used with the existing Norsonic Nor282 or Nor280 power amplifiers. Both the Nor280 and Nor282 amplifiers have built in limitation circuits to protect the speaker from unwanted high and low frequency components outside the frequency bands required for sound insulation testing. The battery-operated power amplifier Nor282 has preset functions to optimize the response of the Nor283.
Since Japanese company Rion, acquired the Norwegian company (and indirectly also acquired Scantek, Norsonic’s North American parent company), in August 2022, the two sound and vibration instrumentation manufacturers have accelerated its development program, as reflected by the Nor283 announcement.
Although Norsonic continues to operate as an independent company within the Rion group, the Norwegian brand expanded its global reach and strengthened its R&D capabilities. Norsonic is now the R&D center for high-end premium sound level meters and highly sophisticated software for building acoustics, room acoustics, sound power, and cloud-based noise and vibration monitoring.
The latest announcement from Norsonic in this area is precisely the Nor282 battery-operated power amplifier, which complements the company’s speaker sources for measurements. This integrated portable amplifier with color display, not only provides the maximum sound pressure level out of the Norsonic range of speakers, but already integrates basic features, such as a noise generator and built-in graphical equalizer. Thanks to the large color display, users can adapt the speaker’s frequency response to the room response to fulfill the requirements for difference between adjacent one-third octave bands as per ISO 10140-5 and ISO 16283-1.
It’s a great rugged solution for building acoustic and room acoustic measurements, equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity for ease of use. The Nor282 expanded on the Nor280 basic model, launched over 20 years ago but still doing its job. Either of the two amplifiers are able to deliver even more impressive SPL when powering the new Nor283 dodecahedron loudspeaker, which conforms to all the relevant ISO sound insulation and room acoustic standards. All units are supplied with individual calibration certificate confirming directional radiation response.
Now offering a lighter, smaller and more rugged sound source for both laboratory and field use, the Nor283 dodecahedron loudspeaker has been designed for continuous operation for more than one hour at full power. The low weight of less than 5,3 kg is obtained by use of specially designed loudspeaker elements with neodymium magnets. The low weight, however, does not come at the expense of robustness. The cabinet is molded in high density polyethylene and the speakers are protected by custom steel grids.
The Nor283 speaker comes with a high-quality tripod ensuring correct placement so that unwanted reflections and structural transmissions are kept at a minimum. Inside the 25mm tripod tube mount on the speaker there is a 8mm threaded screw allowing the speaker to be easily mounted upside down in the sealing of an anechoic chamber or similar.
